Fiat Bravo 2.0 M-jet noise.

Coming home from work on friday I noticed a distinct, louder than the normal diesel sound, knock/tick from the engine that increases with the revs so is much more noticeable at speed than in traffic. Not only this it also produces white smoke from the exhaust with anything over 1/4 throttle with the turbo producing a reasonable amount of boost, doesnt smoke under light and constant acceleration. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be? Might be worth noting that the car still drives and pulls the same, although I stayed of boost as much as possible the rest of the way home that night and that oil and coolant levels are normal.

DPF on a regen? Assuming it has one of course.

Yes it does have a DPF.
