Mid December I decided snow and RWD Merc was as bad as It can be, something I knew but chose to ignore when buying it. The day after my works Christmas do I came across a Daihatsu Terios on Gumtree only 4 miles from my house so as I was off I popped in to see it late afternoon. 11 months MOT and 3 weeks road tax, seemed solid, everything worked and it was cheap.... and Purple so as our 4th car OK with Mrs. I agreed a price, went to bank and bought it.

It's been a great wee car, used for dog transport at weekends, parked on nights out anywhere no worries with a taxi home, good mpg, just needed a battery and new wipers. Hardly had any snow but not bothered, its probably used more than any other car in the household at the moment! The road tax reminder went to the previous owner so I just went to the Post Office between Christmas and New Year with insurance and MOT documents to get a new disc. 6 months cost £148.50, at the time I didn't give it a second thought as with exception of my main car anything else I've taxed to date has been similar.

A week or so goes by and the odd E-bay search shows Terios adverts with 'cheap road tax' within the blurb. This gets me thinking so a quick DVLA vehicle enquiry using reg numbers from adverts shows 6 months road tax cost £74.25. My car showed £148.50 so different but a match for what would've come out the computer when I went to the Post Office.

My car was registered in 1997 in The Isle of Man then in the UK in 2006 on an R Reg. I understand the cut off point where tax is based on emissions rather than capacity but never really considered how an import, especially Isle of Man one is viewed by DVLA.

Can anyone clarify how this works?
