Mercedes C class coupe 350 V6 petrol

Bought this car new last year in July - have done 10,000 miles since then - on busy motorway journeys mpg can be as good as 37mpg - however the engine has used 5 litres of Shell Ultra 5-40 fully synthetic oil - in 40+ years of motoring I've never owned a car with such a thirst! Mercedes say this is quite normal - is it? Should I use a different oil? Advice please!

I have had the same model since May. I've just had first service at 15.5k miles. Only added one litre at around 8k and oil was on minimum when it went in for service. This oil consumption is about on par with other cars I have owned and a lot less than yours.

I bought mine in Nov 2011, I had it 8 months and was about to embark on a long road trip. I went to check the oil before the trip to find the bonnet catch was not connected. I rang Mercedes and they said "don't worry, those 3.5 V6's use next to no oil, we'll fix the catch when you get back".

It went all the way to its first service without a drop required.

Your usage does sound excessive.

I had mine serviced in Nov 2012 and checked the oil last week and still none required.



Edited to say that I did 8,000 miles in the first year and another 2,000 in the last 3 months.

I have a 2008 estate and had it for about 6 months and it hasn't lost a drop of oil. Total mileage is now nearly 70k miles so looks like a strong engine.

Got mine in June 12 and no oil used. Windscreen wipers are rubbish though.

After a 1800 mile round trip to Poznan in Poland via Luxembourg and Paderborn returning via Hamburg the oil consumption has settled down - plenty of 120mph+ sessions on the autobahn have probably helped! Fuel consumption averaged 35 - at best 38 at worst 32! Not bad!

It sounds great ; I like that v6 engine .
I had the maps out last night planning a trip to Auschwitz and back via Bratislava and Vienna : Mercs seem to thrive on high speed long days on the autobahns .
