Fitted a set of Toyo R1Rs on my chim a couple of weeks ago to replace my worn Triple 8s.

In the limited time that they've been fitted, I've been really impressed with them.

Alun450 called round this afternoon and while we had a little on road comparison between the 4.6s we came to a grip type conclusion.

When accelerating flat out on a damp greasy dual carriageway in second, my chim with possibly a tad more power didn't spin the wheels at all.

When repeating the same move in Aluns very lovely chim with road tyres, the instant breakaway was frightening!

So, tonight's top tip is, bin those standard road tyres and fit some grippy R1Rs!

Sizes,

255/40/17s ands 235/40/17s

Trim rear arches, top inner edge but they are available in all sizes.

the handling really inspires confidence and is substantially better then standard tyres.

With a bit of shopping around, I got the set of 4 for £620.00, expensive but they are big sizes.

A cheaper alternative may be the Federal RSR.
I suspect only 80% as grippy as the Toyo

Bugger, would do but they don't make the size I need for the front. banghead
I need 225/35/18 front
255/35/18 rear.

Any suggestions for summat decent, getting tired of looking sideway on to crash barrier when gassed.

If you have the clearance Mac... then maybe 265/35 rear and 225/40 front may fit ok

No good mate, had some 888's in 225/40/18 and they fouled the arches [are for sale if anyone interested, low miles] Have 225/35/18 [falkens] on at moment with no probs' apart from grip that is.

Cheers but my 888's were from a Cerbera owner [forget why he changed now] anyhow, don't fit without fouling on my Chimaera.

You are running 18inch fronts on a chim? that must be tight!

If I remember correctly there is about 10mm difference in rolling diameter between 35 and 40 profile. Also the road tyres look stretched over the wheel whilst the motorsport toyos are very square shouldered.

Any of you boys run both triple 8's and the R1R?- I would be interested to hear the comparison.

I've run about 4-5 sets of triple 8s and they are fantastic.

Just fitted the R1Rs a few hundred miles ago so can't give a conclusive judgement but in these greasy conditions running about 350 horses, the grip in really awesome, (and I don't like using that word)!

Did a T/D with Mr Flying Banana at Combe lat year, Rob on the R1Rs and me with the Triple 8s.

There was no way I could stay with him in the morning with patchy drizzle but later in the day when it was dry there wasn't much in it!

So with that experience, the R1Rs are better in the wet and very similar in the dry.

Id go along with that, having used both, the R1R's are very simular to the 888 in the dry but much better on damp track
