Alvis td21 Timing question

I hope someone can help,
My hand book says to set the static ignition to 5 degrees BTC. Is this also the dynamic setting any tried & tested advice would be welcome , I'm not really into theory's & good ideas as a bit here or there will have a dramatic effect on a very thirsty engine

Static is static and dynamic as the word implies is moving. So the two are certainly not the same.

5 degrees BTDC for a static figure sounds perhaps a mite low but is probably not far off. The TD21 almost certainly had an automatic advance in the distributor and at speed, fully engaged could easily be 40 degrees BTDC.

But questions on timing etc are probably more appropriately asked of the owners club. I would expect it to be thirsty though, it's a heavy old car, period road test of a manual car got 20.2 mpg.
