I have noticed on my 996 that there is a wire attached to the engine cover lock that enables the lock to be opened manually. This wire runs from the lock towards the passenger side and then disappears behind the rear light block.

It is not a botch job, but looks like a manufacturer's fitting that can be used when the electromagnetic switch is not functioning as it should. It works in the same way as the fuel filler manual release that is within the door frame.

Before I start taking things apart to find the other end, where is the other end of this release wire? I suspect it's behind the rear wheel splash guard above the exhaust.

Any guidance would be helpful.

Regards

H

Hi the cable is taped below the nsr lamp, between lamp and top of bumper.I use a wide wallpaper scraper to lift the lamp up and hook cable out.

Found it - tucked neatly away under the light.

Is there a similar wire for the front luggage compartment? I know there is a jump point on the fuse board in the event of a flat battery, but what about when the electromagnetic switch goes wrong? There must be a mechanical means of opening the front up.

Yes there is. The emergency release cable on your car (elec releases) is in the area of the headlight tray on the driver's side. You have to peel back the wheel arch liner and reach in.

That is a very accurate description of where it is and how to get at it.

The other day when the electric engine compartment lid latch release wasn't working on my 996 Turbo I watched a tech use a plastic wedge to make a small gap between the rear lamp housing and the bumper cover and a long thin pick with a hook at the end to pull the cable and release the engine compartment lid.

It took me more time to type in the above than it took him to get the thing open.

BTW, the spoiler fuse also is the fuse for the electric engine compartment lid latch release.

Thanks - yet another discovery to be made. I thought it might be here as there is evidence of the liner having been moved.

Good luck finding it, I once attempted to after a completely flat battery to no avail despite some very good illustrations from a thread on here. In the end I suffered the ignominy of the alarm going for ages when I hooked a spare battery up to the fuse and door latch and waited for the boot catch to play ball loser

I have found this emergency bonnet lock wire. The best way to find it on your car is to first remove the driver's side headlight block. Having done this the wire will be seen below the headlight tray. It is best to route it to a location that is accessible by you.
