Wifes got a new job....so now I have a car dilema...help!

Evening all,

I have a car based dilema and i'm after peoples thoughts. My current situation is that I have a Nissan 350z 313 that i love but it gets very little use, it has sat in the garage all winter and won't come out for another month or so, for day to day duties and work i have a W plate, 101k VW passatt, My wife works 8 miles from home doing a 16 mile round trip and currently has a company car, so this means in terms of running costs we are paying for 2 cars.

However, my she has gone and got herself a new job that will mean losing the company car and doing about 30 miles per day and potentailly leaving it in a public car park (not sure yet if she has parking at the new place) so I'm torn with what we do regarding our new look car situation.

Some of my options as I see them are:

1 - I get the zed out of the garage full time and let her use it for work while I continue to use the passatt...pluses, we only have 2 cars which makes financial sense....minuses, she would be using my baby, I don't want it to get hurt and the mileage would go up a lot.

2 - She gets herself a car to use for work and i keep the zed for weekends and the passatt for day to day...pluses, my baby doesn't get hurt...minuses, we are spending a bloody fortune on cars.

3 - I get rid of the Zed and get something more suitable for her to use and I stick with the passatt...pluses, I don't really see any...minuses, I may not have a fun car in my life.

I'm sure there are lots of other options and maybe some of you have found yourselves in a similar position, either way I'd be grateful of any opinions on what you would do.

I'd go with option 2 - but look at multicar policies.

At present she will be paying company car tax, assuming the new job is similar or better pay then she will be up by the value of the tax. How much the tax is depends on how much she earns (20% or 40%) and obviously what the car is. Might be enough to run a snotter.

We had three cars a couple of years back, and found that going to a multicar policy meant I could insure the two decent cars plus a snotter for what the two decent cars had previously cost me.

So I'd say run another banger and keep your 350 for pleasure.

I already have both mine with Sky insurance so I guess it could be handy getting her's on their too if that's the way we go.

Use the 350z, forget about mileage!! Cars are made to be driven, you love it, you look after it.. might as well enjoy it! Give mrs the Passat.

No offence intended, but it's a 2007 350z, not a DB4GT Zagato - it's costing you a fortune depreciating sat in the garage for six months a year, just give the missus the Passat and drive it yourself.

Not sure what values of 350z are doing now, but you could sell it, get another commuting snotter and a TVR for the weekend.

I'd have thought it would be cheaper to run the 350Z for 20k miles a year than to run a third car.

No offence taken...I know it's only a 350z and I do annoy myself in being such a big girls blouse about it but i can't help it...I've always been the same when i've owned a half decent car.

Petrol cost's thankfully aren't too much of a worry....I'm really not emotionally strong enough to cope with a diesel yet.

Sell the Passat & the 350Z, then buy two MX5s

Just chatting with the wife....she suggested getting shot of the passatt, keeping the Zed and getting her a mk3 MR2 roadster or an MX5.

Doesn't sound a bad idea to me.
