Canon PowerShot S110 - recommended?

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger for this £300 camera as my daily shooter. I don't have a digital camera at the moment as my last one got stolen

Anyone have anything positive or negative to say about it?

Plenty of us here have one of this series (s95,s100 etc).

Its a great little point and shoot, with lots of manual options etc.

I've got an S95 and although I don't use it that much, it really is fantastic!

I've got some great photos with it (for me), and I love that it offers a lot of control and that I can shoot in raw and get back an awful lot of detail in the photos with just a little processing that you just would have lost otherwise.

Guess that the newer ones are even better, and I think they have a better sensor as well?

I would agree with this. Especially the XZ2 - that has some fantastic reveiws:

Trouble is if the OP is looking at S110 then obviously size is an issue. I had an S100 and tried out all the alternatives to replace it with Xz1, LX7 etc, but the only camera that was of comparable size and truly pocketable, with the IQ to match was the RX100 - and it's a cracker.

RX is extremely expensive though.

If size is an issue, hold out for the XZ-10 as it seems to be much more inline with the S110.

The xz-2 is just a little too big for most people (I use it as a holiday snapper and fits perfectly in my cargo pockets)

If you can afford the Sony RX100, buy it as it's the best out there at the moment. If not the Canon S110 comes pretty close and is a lot cheaper.

I don't get it - how everybody mentions how amazing the sensor in the RX100 is and nobody mentions how slow the lens is...
It's f/4.9 at the long end! Panasonic LX7 is f/2.3. Sure, Sony may be better at higher ISO but with others you won't have to go that high in the first place.

Also, S110 is £239 delivered at DigitalRev

All the reviews mention that, but still universally say it's the best out there at the moment. I haven't tied one, but the review sites I trust say it's a belter. Was voted best camera 2012 and one of the best 50 inventions of 2012. Can't be all bad then

I'm not saying it's bad. I played with one for a while but immediately dismissed it and bought G15 which I'm VERY happy with.

I'm talking about focussing the review and its verdict solely on the sensor and not taking into consideration how slow the lens is, how lacking the menu system is comparing it to Canon or Panasonic and how much more expensive it is to its competition.

Whilst we're here, I use the Canon S95 every day (It's so tiny it lives in my jeans pocket)... S110 is a bit better (even).

It isn't just the small sensor, that's obviously a major feature. It's just the overall package, absolutely stunning IQ, fast accurate AF, 10 fps in burst mode for action stuff like skiing, superb lens, and tbh yes it's slower at the tele-end but given the likely usage the wide-end gets a LOT more use. The fact that it's so tiny and discreet means its a great take-everywhere camera and allows you to get candid shots as people don't really notice it. It's bigger than my previous S100 but not by a lot, where the LX7, G1X, XZ1/2 are just too big to slip in a jeans pocket, so just don't do it for me - I already have my 5DMK3 and CSC for when I need the extra control/quality.

And in terms of price, well coming from an S100, it certainly justifies the cost to me given how much better the images are, particularly in low-light situations. "Value" is of course very subjective, but given that I happily use my RX100 as opposed to my 5D in many situations where the loss in quality would have been too much with the S100 I think it's a snip at £419 at DigitalRev.

Yes, but at the cost of an even smaller sensor compared to the XZ2, which was already left in the dust by the RX100.

I guess if the £100 difference was critical then you could make a case for the XZ10, but I haven't seen any reviews yet to say what the image quality is, and I doubt very much it can compete with the RX100 given the sensor size. Like I say for me the image quality makes it worth it, your mileage may vary.

Good shout - but it is about 50% over budget. Fantastic bit of kit though!

I've just picked up an S100, secondhand, but just 4 months old with less than 100 shots on it. I have a Canon 50D, but don't want to be lugging that around all the time, so got this as a 'carry everywhere' camera. Initial thoughts are that it is a cracking little camera. Nice build quality, plenty of nice features, user friendly and really nice IQ.

If the S110 is an improvement on this, which I assume it is, then I can't imagine you'd be anything other than delighted with it. Yes the Sony RX100 is better by all accounts, but at a significantly higher price.

Hi guys, I'm the OP

We got the S110 but the missus hates the flash. It pops up on the left taking up most of the room where you naturally want to hold the camera. And she says the flash makes her face look like a ghost (not sure that's the camera's fault thought lol!)

I've asked her to use it for a week before we return it to Amazon.

Anybody have any recommendations for another camera in our price range that has a better flash and is easy to use (we just use auto function all the time and as a simple point and click)
