No idea whether this should be here or Homes, Gardens etc - mods please feel free to move as appropriate.

Now, I should start by saying that I don't mind dogs, good friends have them and they seem to love licking me, so not a problem.... smile

I moved into my house in December (so yes the dogs were here before and No, I didn't notice them on the viewings I had), but now I'm in seemingly in most of the gardens which adjoin mine are dogs, which don't seem to like each other (or me) or like a good chat via barking.....which is fine most of the time, but they seem to be out in all weathers including the recent snow and clearly aren't used to people (me) being in my garden (new build house) so bark at me a lot.

My slight challenge is that they bark during the night, and very early in the morning, probably meaning they live outside, and have started to wake me up during the night - once one starts the others seem to follow naturally. I'm guessing they must be cared for but is it normal to leave them out overnight and should the owners be trying to at least keep them a little quiet between say midnight and 6am ? Or are these just unhappy about being left outside all the time and vocalise it ? I'm assuming they're OK but friends who have dogs don't leave them out almost permanently so to me seems a little odd.....

Can I issue them with a S59/ASBO wink LOL

I could try and find the owners, in case they aren't aware but that could be tricky as even on an aerial map I can't out where the one house with 3 dogs is let alone which lane I'd need to walk down to find it.......

Normal advice - keep a diary, gather evidence, report to environmental health at your local council. You have a right to live a peaceful existence.

I also feel sorry for the dogs - selfish owners! (I am a dog owner...)

I can live with the odd bit of disturbance (even if it isn't great sometimes), I'm more concerned for the welfare of the dogs tbh, as it seems rather mean to buy one then not spend any time with it.....

Are they working dogs or pets?

By the way whatever the answer it doesn't excuse the owners from showing some consideration to their neighbours and ensuring the dogs are quiet, however it might answer your question about why they're outside and whether they are cared for or not.

From what I can see they're domestic pets, a couple of German Shepherds in one garden with another I can't identify and a spaniel in another.

My aunts neighbour has started complaining about her dog barking, which it does for about five minutes in a 24 hour period. We have seen him on his knees, his side of the adjoining fence trying to get her dog to bark while he's recording any noises the dog makes.

That sounds bonkers........these ones might get used to me in my garden in time which is cool, it's more middle of the night that seems strange

When my mother moved into her current house she went round all the nearby neighbours and told them if there was any problem with her dog barking to let her know when and she'd do what she could to stop it. In three years she had no problems with her neighbours although being a corner house the dog does tend to bark if someone walks past the back garden whilst walking a dog. He stops once they've passed. This probably happens maybe once a day, if that.

Anyway, three months ago, some scumbags move into the council propety that's on the adjacent corner opposite her house. You know the sort; workshy, dirty looking vermin.

I went to my mothers recently and there was a note she'd pinned to the fridge "people are getting sic of you dog yaking shut it up!". Each word written in an assortment of capitals and lower case (fking inbreds!). Now I knew this anonymous note hadn't come from any of the other neighbours... because she gets on with them. That left the new neighbours which it blatantly was because the idiots had written their note on a piece of paper that had on the reverse information about contacting the Rents Team and the details for the local council housing authority. Theirs is the only council property in a 10 house radius. Not only that but they clearly made the assumption that because they didn't know anyone that my mother didn't either. Did they really think she doesn't speak to her neighbours? So I did what any good son did, I went over and confronted them!

I was polite and explained we'd had an anonymous note and that I was looking to find out when the dog was being a nuisance and resolve the matter. They flat out denied it was them. I asked them if they had heard the dog barking and they told me he'd never been a problem. I pointed out that whoever it was lived in a council house due to what was on the reverse and that everyone else nearby owned their property as well as the fact my mother knows her neighbours and they still denied it was them. Why do that? I know it was them, they know it was them, why ignore the issue?

I wouldn't mind but these scumbags own three dogs themselves! Perhaps if they weren't sat at home all day they wouldn't notice the occasional dog barking every now and then.

My neighbour had a dog when we moved in and my MiL commented about how I could stand hearing it bark all day.

I pointed out that it maybe had a couple of 3 minute barking sessions a day, never at unsociable hours and my son played an electric guitar a lot (all in reasonable hours). I was definitely getting the better deal.

The poster above has real issues where his mum lives...... I would struggle with that.

Who, if they're anything like mine, won't give a fk.

I had a puppy barking on and off almost continuously all day in the garden of a house in the next street. Basically I think its owners went to work and left the dog in the garden, it got lonely and started barking. I could hear it inside my house with the windows and doors shut and it basically meant being out in my garden was untenable.

Tried to work out which house it was but they're terraced so couldn't get behind them so could only narrow it down to one of three.

Phoned the council, told "if you can tell us which house it is we'll write to them". Explained why I couldn't to which they basically said they weren't interested then as there was nothing they could do.

After several calls and similar responses they said they'd "send someone to visit the area". They then claimed that someone in their team had driven past and not heard anything. I asked for a time and date that this had happened, couldn't give it.

Gave up in the end, they were absolutely useless and could not have been less interested in dealing with the issue.
