Hi Guys, a heads up to any one or anyone you know using "ibg star" blood glucose monitor.
My other half is type 1 and had a hypoglaecemic seizure the other day her 1st since being diagnosed 8 years ago, to our disbelief it has been put down to her newly aquired ibg star meter reading nearly 3 mmol higher then the bog standard NHS mico meter ( that turns out to be really accurate
)
she tested 3.3mmol with the ibg star device moments later she seized
a nurse from a nearby pharmacy came in with a meter of their own ( a micro meter nhs standard issue) and she tested 1.4mmol on it.... in the heat of the moment it was put down to her being "low" bearing in mind she has had 8 years with no seizures and good control bad lows for her in the past have been 2.3mmol with no seizure, brought back up by usualy 15g carb fix etc
it was only when i tested my self the next day on both meters, i was 5.5mmol on the nhs meter and 8.4mmol on the ibg star ( im not diabetic btw )!!!!!
we sent the unit back to boots where we got it from, and got a replacement, the old unit is being sent back to the manufacturer for tests etc...
.......BUT
that after noon she tested her self 6.2 on the NHS meter..... low and behold 7.8 on the ibg star.... FFS
you would think these companies would have these devices that essentially keep you alive, have them figured out before sale to public.... the cheap and cheerful meters from the nhs are bang on accurate, but for a girl of 25 carrying an ugly noisey device that every time makes a beep is followed by a barage of "what was that noise, OWWW whats that you got there ~??" questions from the ignorant public, just highlights the facts of the condition to some one that just wants to get on with it..... the ibgstar let her get on with it as it was discreet ( plugging into the bottom of an iphone) and making no noise... but its inaccuracy could cost her big time not just loosing a driving licence from seizures......
please pass this on to any diabetic friends considering the meter

My wife was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 8 months ago but due to house moves she is only just getting things sorted.
When she was first diagnosed I did a bit of Googling and got a free blood sugar meter from Abbott.
Couple of weeks ago I asked the doctor* if the free meter was any good and he said they are just as good as the ones we use, sometimes they do give duff results, just test twice a day and if a result seems high or low test again.
He also suggested keeping a log of the results - I looked on the Abbott website and they do a cable to download the results to a computer, filled in the form and it was delivered 2 days later.
I've no connection with Abbott just very happy with their service.
Yes, I know they gave me a free meter so I would get the pickers and test strips via the NHS which they no doubt charge a fortune for.

- I took the wife to the Doctors, she went in, I sat in the waiting room, when the Doc came into the waiting room and asked me to come in I was very worried! But it was just to make sure I was fully informed as I was her carer now!
Could be anything (not saying it isn't exactly as you describe) step daughter was diagnosed as type 1 a week before Christmas and the list of do's and don'ts was a real eye opener. Things like shower gels/soaps/sanitizers (what you can/can't use etc) not using a new soap at all is she...?
know what you mean about the sanitizers I know of scented ones making a diff but she uses scent free soap on just about everything.... sorry to hear about your daughter, main thing it won't stop her doing anything in her life
and as i tell my other half, no one appreciates life more then those reliant on medicine for life.... i know i took life fr granted untill i met her.
