Quick "skewer" question

Hello - first post in here ... so be gentle with me.

My wife recently bought me a trainer machine (Elite Volare).

Using it requires replacing the rear quick release "skewer" with one supplied as part of the kit. It looks similar to this.



Is there any reason I can't just leave this in place and use my bike as normal?

The one which came with the bike looks nicer but appears to be, functionally, exactly the same.

Leave it in in, the bike will be perfectly qk to ride.

I found the clamping action of the supplied Elite skewer frankly sucked and even when done up really tight it could be moved with a little force. I bought myself a Shimano skewer from planet X that fits in the Elite fine

Your current one will be fine if it's a similar shape to this however if it has flatter ends then the trainer might not be able to grip the wheel properly. The last thing you need is for your bike to drop mid sprint and end up embedded in your tv.

If you use the supplied skewer then you will have no issues with warranty should anything go wrong.

^This. I use the skewer supplied with my trainer, as it fits the notches perfectly and it only takes 30 seconds to change.

As above. The Tacx skewer is ste of the highest order. Fine for the turbo, but there's no way in hell I'd trust it out on the road. Utterly feeble clamping action.

My tacx skewer has been in my wheel for the last 6 years on my hack bike. I've covered roughly 8 - 10,000 kms on it with absolutely no problem whatsoever. Each to their own.

Shimano has a patent on their cam locking system and its the only one that works properly even at the bottom end of the price scale!
