Hi folks,

Just registered here as I'm at a bit of a loose end, been running myself round in circles picking different cars for my next purchase...

Budget is between £1000-3000, ideally keeping insurance below about £600 on top of that. (23 YO, M, 3 years NCD, decent postcode).

I want something that isn't too slow, 150-200bhp is plenty though, will be used for general A & B road driving and occasional motorway use (but no massive distances).

Economy-wise preferably over 30mpg.

So far on the list I have (in no particular order):

Golf MKiv GTi, 1.8t
Seat leon 1.8t
Skoda Fabia vRS 1900 tdi
Skoda Octavia vRS 1.8t (Yes, I like the idea of this engine...)
Mondeo (ST maybe, don't really fancy fuelling a V6 petrol though)
Focus ST170
Clio 172/182
Honda CTR (budget may be a bit low?)

...You get the idea. Kind of favouring the 182 at the moment, just for the handling, but that could change in the next minute or so.

Any comments on any of the above, or suggestions for alternatives appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Joe.

E36 328i?
E46 330i?
Volvo 850 T5?
Honda Accord Type R?

Lots of choice out there. These I6 petrol BMWs will easily give over 30 mpg - I have seen 42 from my one on a 200 miles motorway trip.

Could get an Audi S3 for that money if you really like the 1.8T?

Hi Joe,

There is obviously quite a bit out there, but it may be wise to choose something relative to your budget and running costs. It may be better to go for a good example of something, rather than stretching your budget and going for a flaky example of something higher end.

You could get a real decent 172 for 3k, probably with some change for breathing mods or resolving any niggling issues in the future. You may well get a CTR for 3k - if its got a good history and has been looked after, should be fairly bulletproof.

Have you thought about a Fiesta ST? Not quite as much power as some of the cars mentioned - but a good all rounder which is faily simple with reasonable running costs.

Good luck with your choice.
