We have decided to have another child. When our 3rd child is born the ages of the other two will be 3 and 6.
I will still want the eldest to use a car seat and not a booster seat.

Are there any cars that can fit 3 car seats abreast?

Or have I got to face facts that a 3rd child will mean buying an MPV or 4x4. I don't have any issues with a 4x4 but it will be for the wife and I know she will prefer an MPV.

Or a Honda FR-V, 6 seater, 2 rows, although the front centre is a bit tight.

Can you get that option on an S-Max? Packaging is terrible enough as it is with two!

FRV would be my shout too, large enough for a child IIRC as handily the gearstrick is console mounted?

You will love a multipla tbh.

Mum had one, meant me and my brother could both get in the front without a fight.

Wouldnt be a problem having the 2 younger ones in the back and the oldest in the front with mum and dad?

Yes, just buy a touring/estate version, AFAIK they have anchoring for 3 seats, but I'm not an expert, never had to test it myself.

The SMax is the big swoopy seven seater, with three equal, seperate seats in the middle row.

The problem with most estates (and even my Disco 2 to a degree) is the the centre pad is narrower than a child seat and the belts are a bugger to get to.

ETA and what cb31 says below. Often the wheel arches intrude into the seat base, shortening the bench and pushing the outer seats inwards.

I really struggled with 530d touring with 3 car seats. Although the car is wide the rear seats are very sculpted so you cannot get the seats next to the doors, they are forced inwards. You can get 3 in but it is incredibly tight and getting the seat belts fastened is a nightmare, more trouble that it was worth.

In the end I swapped it for a Citroen C5 Grand Picasso for family duties. I know it is crap, however the rear seats are flat so car seats fit in with ease and you can always put the older ones in the third row if you want to stop them fighting.

I'm now sick of the C5, not doing my image good, so am thinking of A6 or something again but will face the same problems again. Maybe in a couple of years when they stop wrecking the interior.

That's the problem and, if you have a rear-facing baby seat, it is simply not possible.

The Honda FR-V in EX trim is looking favorable out of the MPV's at the moment. I quite like the idea of using the front centre seat as an huge arm rest.
