Aston Martin DB9 on Ice lake

Hello fellow PH'ers, been away for a few days and I went here .....
Drove 3200 miles all in all, 900 to Copenhagen, then 600 to the Ice lake, got to Norway / sweden and the roads were .....
The Ice lake looked like this ......

Spend 2 days going sideways in a DB9, obviously went off the ice and into the snow, it was easier to take off the number plate and put on a tow hitch. Some t
t had the idea of putting a tow rope on a wheel and pulling me sideways ..... sideway ....! tt.
Ice build up was a problem, in wheels, whel arches, brakes and front grills etc etc
The sun rising on a gorgeous Norweigen crisp snow field / ice lake morning
Over night it dropped to -20 Celcius, the lowest was -22 .....
On the ferry in Denmark making its way tot he German Autobahn .....
The 1500 mile return journey was wet/snow/slush/dry, slow/fast/very fast, this is a picture of the engine after arriving home, it was white, yes white. also after 3200 miles I was 2 litres of oil down. My fault, I should have checked earlier. 2 full litres
Having spent 3200 miles on the roads was a fab experience, went on some interesting roads, had proper winter tyres on and on the Autobahn hit 147 MPH, genuine speed as it was logged on my SatNav (Garmin), all legal as no limit. Winter tyres were limited to 149 MPH, so did not want to exceed the tyres and shread some £1,400.00 tyres.
I now know something about Astons on ice, driving DB9's on snow, going sideways, you name it, it was absolutely exhilerating, I'd do it again in a heart beat ......

use your dipstick man Without these tyres, Michelins AP's, any snow/ice driving would be a joke. These tyres are the best tyres I have ever driven on, they were expensive at about £1,400.00 for a full set of 4, but I was stuck because I could not get them anywhere, they may be more readily available now and thus cheaper ... bugger ...... these tyres are even good on the dry as they are softer compound. But on Snow, the only way I can describe them is, STUNNING, absolutely STUNNING.
I have immediatley removed them when back in SW of UK as I don't want to wear them out.
But 2 wheel drive, just under 500 BHP, on snow, is somewhat a joke, but with these, I cannot praise them enough ........

This shows what happens to the back of the car when spinning up snow and ice from the rear wheel drive, this is only about 30 minutes of driving, this ice builds up and needs to be cleared at the end of the day as the wheels get full up, when I mean full up, I mean the wheel become solid, then they start making a sound as the tyre rubs on the ice in the wheel arch, also the ice starts to hit the caliper. So when you're driving home, the wheel vibrates terrible as the balance is way way out.
You also need to break the ice off on the evening, because overnight the temp drops to -20 and lower and this freezes the ice rock hard, then you start to damage the car to get the ice off.

Fuel is about the same as here, except for Germany, they have 100 Octane fuel, why don't we have this ....?Paul
DB9 does about 28 mpg when at 120kmh, as engine is just under 2000rpm, so really quite good. Germany was different, but when cruising at 110 / 120MPH who really cares what the fuel costs are .......
Where you going in Europe ? I'm off to France in a couple of days, and then Poland in about 8 weeks. The only reason for Poland is its incredibly cheap and you have about 700 miles across Germany from one side to another, on SUMMER tyres, I am just gagging to hit the rev limiter in 6th gear .......

France,Belgium,Switzerland or Austria,Italy (Monaco) and back
Visiting various motor related places including Stelvio Pass
Looking forward to this apart from the fuel bill!!

Sounds stunning ....... i'm jealous ....... you know I'm a supreme expert on speeding fines in Europe, what country charges what and who bans you etc etc, I would strongly advise you to check what each country does about speeding, some are expensive, some cheap, some will ban you for having a car that, "looks", fast, others will take your Aston to, "show you", and you will fight to get it back. Use the cruise control, use it a lot and let others overtake you, don't be tempted to go head to head to anyone, long after they are asking their co-pilot to drive them the rest of the journey, you'll be enjoying your car.
As for Swiss, that has to be the best country on the planet for sceanary, but most of all, "THE TUNNELS", they are long and echo like mad, forget fuse 22, take the dam silencer off and just listen. Use a GoPro camera and then post the film on YouTube ....... I will this summer

Reading up on Switzerland that can be a major fine if caught speeding.

France - no you can't use a Sat Nav if its got speed camera locations. Can use standalone Sat Navs such as TomTom if you've got the latest maps for France as they have removed speed camera locations.There is no cross border agreement between UK and France, so you can't get points.
Police have seriously clamped down on speeding, but there are not lots of Police about, so there is opportunity to speed. Don't do it on the motorways within 30 miles of the channel ports. Don't even consider it near a toll - some have fixed cameras monitored by the Police. If you really want to speed get off the motorways, look at a map find a big long straight B road and go for it. If there are mobile Police speed units on these roads the cars coming the other way will be flashing you like mad as a warning. However, I've had them warning me at least 5 miles before the Police camera unit, so it gets confusing to work out why you are being flashed at and where the police are.
