I'd always used my witches cauldron sized pot and found 4 hours was sufficient, in a normal pot, on the lowest setting, to cook up a sufficiently tender beef stew.

Astoundingly, and in disbelief despite the name, slow cookers are rather slow! Tried one for the first time last night and it took hours just to reach temperature, a delicious beef stew, which will have stewed for 24 hours come dinner time, supremely tender pieces of meat just oozing all the other juices and flavours from the slow cooker. This could never be achieved on the hob, left unattended day and night.

Favourite slow cook recipes anyone? I imagine lamb shanks are going to be mindblowingly delicious cooked this way. smash
