Basically I work in field sales, the way the system currently works is I claim back what I spend and it comes back in about 3 weeks. I have previously been on a trip once a month.

I have recently returned from a trip however my boss wants me to go now at least twice a month. This month had some expenses I wasnt expecting so I can't afford to fork out another £150,I resquested an advcnace just to cover petrol which would be about £80, not an advance on wages just to cover work trip. The boss has come back with if I do not find money or get a loan I will be fired.

My question is, is it unreasonable to request money to cover work expenses?

Tell him to give you a company CC or poke his job.

IMHO, I do not think you are being unreasonable but you will get much better advice from Breadvan et al.

Forgot to mention, I'm basically in probation period, 5months in so he can!
If I go to HR which is basically the MD and his boss I'm screwed but I'm tempted just to so my boss will get in the ****

I think your boss is being unreasonable.

He could always give you a float out of petty cash for, say, £200.

Everytime you come back, hand in the receipts, to top the float back up to £200.

If he expects you to do these trips, then he should help you without you needing a bank loan.

Actually forget unreasonable and insert bully!

Not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure it's still constructive dismissal even if it's during the probation period unless they have some genuine concerns over your performance / conduct.

What is in your contract regarding expenses?

The guy sounds like a cock tbh. I don't have a problem issuing money up front for employees costs when away and I can't see why he should be such an arse about it. Have you had other issues with him? or have you been failing to meet any quotas at the moment? It should not be relevant but nothing funnier than folk.

Can you not get a credit card and use this alone for company expenses if you can't get him to play ball?

Again I'd want to see out of interest what is agreed in your contract.

In my contract it says nothing about expenses or me paying up front, in previous jobs I've been given either a company credit card or a float.

I explained this month why I can't afford it and asked for a breakdown of what I spend weekly on going out and on my gf, I told him its none of his f****** business.

I havent hit target for the last 2 months, so he will probably use that excuse to get rid of me. We have had previous clashes so now its about holding on and looking for another job.

He previously threatened me with I will give you a sh** reference to future employees over the phone so you cant prove I did, so baically he is a ****.

Do I go to HR or is it not worth the hassle seeing as its the MD?

I think you need to get the fk out mate! I sure as hell know I wouldn't be wanting to work for a like that. Get looking for something else asap. Best of luck.

You are five months in to a six? month probationary period so if he is planning to get rid of you hes either going to do it soon or hold a meeting to extend your probationary period based on poor performance (missed targets)

The fact he was asking such questions is completely out of order. It sounds like a relationship that has completely disintegrated. I'd be looking for an out - quick. Its always best to keep it as professional as you can from your point of view, ironically that will infuriate his kind even more.

Your main problem is your not hitting targets and if he drops you before your probation period ends, it really wouldn't be worth much chasing...

Is your HR approachable for a chat on the QT? Reasoning that it states nowhere that you have to have personal funds available to cover any costs up front?

What about putting it all on a credit card, since you always pay off a credit card in arrears and a company always pays expenses in arrears also.

+1 for find another job and leave them to it.

Although using a credit card would be one way around the situation, what happens when they sack you and then refuse to pay / delay payment of your expenses?

Just get out asap with the minimum of bad feeling. If you do tell them to go and fk themselves then that pretty much guarantees that you'll need a favour from them at some point in the future...

Basically I can't get a credit card, through no fault of own. It would solve the problem but thats not the point that hes being such a **** about the whole situation.

I'm currently looking now for anoter job as I can no longer work here while he is the boss! He sits opposite me which is also fun!

Speak to the MD, tell him that whilst you accept you are a little behing the curve on sales targets, this guy is placing you in an impossible situation.

Not just on the expenses, but say to the MD that his threats of a st verbal reference and general attitude have led you spend a lot of time worrying about your position rather than thinking positively about sales.

If the MD knows anything about sales, he will know the right atmosphere and a reward based culture are essential to a motivated and sucessful team.

It doesn't sound like you have anything to lose. I hate st managers, why do we have so many of them !

I don't think it is unreasonable - unfortunately in the real world unexpected expense can occur - and to be honest - i think your boss is been a bit of a plank.

Putting his employee in a situation where he (or she) can't do his or her job because said boss won't cover the cost in advanced - and than sacking said employee is going to cost a lot more than 80 quid.

I mean its not like you are requesting your wages early - you are simply faced with an expense that you can't afford - an expense you will incour as part of your work.

Id simply get on with searching for another job - your bound to find another one eventually - i was in a situation in a previous job where i worked hard - but got nothing but grief in return.

So back to education i went - am in a far better situation now imo as a result - and suggest that you sit down and work out where you want to go from here in a positive manner - life is far too short for planks of bosses who are utterly clueless on how to manage staff.

I can't offer anything constructive other than he is being an idiot.

I have lent money and paid for hotels on my credit card for employees if they are having problems. I am asking them to go away and they shouldn't be out of pocket because of it.

You're effectively lending your employer money to do your job. Credit card is one option but why should you have to?

I'd be looking for an out, your boss sounds like a tt.
