What does eveyone here, particularly the BiB, think of this little 'innovation'?
Frankly any I've seen look even dodgier than most crims, here in Manchester they have recruitment posters up, and the unshaven peasant in the pictures looks like his previous modelling job was for a Crimewatch reconstruction!
What exactly do these guys do? Has anyone seen them do anything besides ask kids politely to move on? And have the BiB found that they have freed them up to do their jobs better, as was claimed they would?
Personally I think they're just a way of appearing to do something about street crime while not having to fork out for more actual officers. Some of it is a good idea, in that there would be someone who would bother to call the police if they were needed. But I can only see little Hitlers applying for the job in reality.
Not to mention, the bright red uniforms they have in Manchester look bloody comical...

I was going to post a thread about this myself, but found this...unanswered one...
What DO the BIB think about this? Or would you all rather not say?
From what I hear these 'guys' have no powers of arrest, no handcuffs, no proper training to defend themselves, and NO RADIO'S!!!!! Can that be true???? have they really not got radio's???
The Yoof of today will eat these guys for breakfast once word gets out how powerless they are.

Big whoohah in the media the other day. The sickness record of this "things" is horrendous and they report at the drop of the hat. The reason research has shown for this is that there is lack of job satisfaction and boredom.
Now, Home Sec. Wetblanket, at the Party shindig has promised more than 5,000 or more on our streets by April 2005. You watch they will be given additional powers without recompense for additional responsibilties. (He's trying to get a cheaper Mk 2 Plod through the back door)
Notice they always seem to walk around in pairs which must put the wage bill in line with a single Plod. All I have spoken to would rather have a Mk 1 Plod than two Mk 2"s except desk bound Senior Officers playing lip service to Wetblanket.

No doubt its the next step up the ladder for the local door men. The only community officers that I have encountered to date are rejects from the field of work unable to hold down a decent honest job.
My Son a 20 year old University student as commented on his mates of the same age who have tried in vain to join plod. These lads are decent and educated but choose not to go to University. Out of seven who applied to plod only one was accepted. They all passed the medicals and their A level results were good enough not to have to sit the entrance exam.
This Goverment is not investing the money they say they are in Law and Order by employing 2nd rate law enforcment officers.

Hi DVD
I saw two of them in my home town the other day. The guy was average height/slim build; the women was yep....you've guessed it around 5ft and mega fat. They were 'aving a word with some local chavs, trying to find out who had bricked a bus stop glass window. They all just laughed at the toy plod. What use is a plod with no powers of arrest anyway?
As has been said, its just window dressing to make the figures look good. The law abiding public want REAL COPPERS, WHO ARE PROPERLY TRAINED AND RESPECTED, not these pathetic excuses of policepersons ( did you like that. Policepersons.....isn't it oh so politically correct

Well,
Our lot are actually working quite well. Initially I was very sceptical about the motive, just about everything really.
In practise, they do tend to free the PC's from the crap jobs. Obviously I can only comment on my particular patch but they are pretty invaluable in sitting with found vehicles, bothering yobs, sitting at audible alarms, send to type jobs, registered keeper checks etc etc.
It does indeed free the response car up for 'response' type jobs. I have wasted so many hours sitting with found stovecs waiting for recovery, waiting at premises whos alarms have gone off waiting for key holders, etc etc, just those type of jobs really.
Our lot aren't tasked to deal with potentially violent jobs like domestics or pub fights/disorder etc. If they do find themselves in trouble they have a radio, and press their emergency button as would a PC who needs urgent assistance.
No, they don't have an asp or quickcuffs, but I can safely say that the ones in my nick aren't the boneheads people profess them to be, they are not a bad bunch, keen as mustard and do indeed free the Police officers of the group up for more proactive policing.
Obviously I can only comment on 'my' wardens, things will differ from station to station, force to force.
Ours are ok.

Your gaffer seems to be using his resources in common sense way.
It is a bit like how the qualified teacher uses the teaching assistant and the little helper - as tool in classroom - and how my husband deploys auxiliary staff, und how I use the dogsbody in the lab.....
I have seen the ones in Manchester. The litter wardens - I applaud those as they have not been politically correct with the children who drop crisp packets and the like all over the streets .... there was hugest outcry from the "Think of the chuldrunnnnn! She's only 12 brigade"
Diddums! Old enough to know better!
However, the CSOs I have seen there up near the Uni (eldest was having a look-see).....
Him - weedy und I could have floored him - even in my delicate state..... Her - I am not as wide as that - even mit the not so little bump!
Und what were they doing? Just sauntering looking bored .....
I want real cops - strong, muscly, lean, keen chaps/chappesses, trained chaps and chapesses, educated, sound knowledge of law, ability to use common sense, no abuse of position of authority, objective take on each incident, no fake tans, no "Marilyns" mit the peroxide bottle
, Und I think TonyRec has right idea in his thread!
I reckon they are there simply to provide a visual presence to deter criminals and make them move elsewhere.
Basically community-wide security guards.
If any crime does actually occur I can see them doing little more than calling the police and then providing witness statements.
Considering the public generally turns a blind eye, dont approach the police with witness statements or want to 'get involved' I dont see any real problem with paying a select few of the public to make up for the rest.
If i see one of the fruckers with a speed gun, then thats it. I'll do time

Swilly, the day one of them is armed with a speed gun, I'm off like a hairy goat.
As wildcat says, if we have to have them, then a common sense approach is needed with deploying them.
One of ours is particularly good, he spends a lot of his time in a high crime area, is particularly proactive and his 'nose' has resulted in a few good arrests. So, fair play to those that put the effort in, and those that don't need a good kick up the rear.

Get fake tans out of your mind...for goodness sake...
I know - Liebchen - but even the Darling is at it - no-one can get that "orange" naturally - that is why we like calling him the "toothsome Cornetto"
Orange face, white hair .... black brows almost meeting in the middle like the chocolate sauce on a Cornetto.....
Und of course - there is the one who was on Traffic Cops und look what happened to him
as you say - now a "tram worker" und I now have surreal visions of him giving chase to a speeding car in his tram....
or legging it after a Schwarzfahrer .... Dwight VanDriver said:

Nah then sithee DVD. Please remind me as yer owd mate FiF is a tad under the weather but which of our Lords and Masters once said "There will be no two tier Police Service."
By gum Fif thous hitten t.nail ont heed.
My objections are the fact that they are dressed almost identical to a real Plod and this I consider is not by accident. Two we have here, have never heard of the Charles Atlas course have recently been seen eating land and sea whilst patrolling and holding hands with the boyfriend. Their sins are heaped onto real Plods.
Dress then in dayglo orange (no white tops - sacriledge to my former jobs, snowdrop and traffic.) and maybe I could be convinced.
