Any suggestions for a fun/useful/affordable wee gift for a 17yo lad who's just passed his test?

get him a key with a keyring on it with BMW or something on it... Just that. Then give it to him. Sit back and watch the disappointment.

If he's actually going to be getting a car then get him those ghastly headlight eyelashes for a laugh. One of those 12v tyre inflators that have a pressure gauge and lights are quite useful, especially if you have a bicycle (takes seconds).

I was going to suggest a 12v air compressor too. Spare bulb kit and a first aid kit are always good things to have too.
Haynes manual and/or some spanners if he is reasonably practical.

Get him a 10L jerrycan full of fuel, that way if he ever miscalculates/gets lost and runs out of fuel then he isn't screwed.

This. I have a GPS but I love getting the map out and planning a trip, making the most of the A and B roads. Tomorrow I pick up my new car and have managed to include the snake pass into my journey home because of the road atlas.
Be on the lookout for a red Mk1 MX5 with the driver grinning like a wking chimp if you're that way tomorrow.
