Apologies if this has been posted before - couldn't see it with a search!

Currently have a 2008 530d touring. Do about 20,000 miles a year, and its a great tool for the job. Have two small children, and it just about fits in everything for holidays etc. Tow a box trailer containing bike etc. at race weekends.

But I appear to be coveting a VW Transporter or Caravelle - would be very handy to have all that space, could remove a couple of seats and stick the bike in the back, sleep in it for race weekends, have somewhere to sit out of the rain when the family are out and about - am I mad for even considering this? Anyone else been in a similar position? Will I hate driving it about for work when I'm in it by myself?

The only way to decide is to drive one and go from there. Also, you might want to pop along to the caravan tents and motorhome forum--> http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/forum.asp?h=0...smile

Possibly, but they will be more interested in the VW California surely?

The Caravelle is more MPV - not very PH I know, but needs must...

A caravelle will be classed as a car so 70mph/60mph rather than 60/50mph of a van (motorways/A-roads) but I guess either is better than not being able to use the outside lane when towing.

Either will still drive like a van.

Had same situ last year, had a van and a car but was happier to use car with trials bike on a rack for longer journeys - just nicer place to be as long as weather was OK for getting changed etc, different sport though as either competing or going home, no hanging around between races.

Not worth keeping car & running cheaper Transit, rather than having expensive Caravelle smelling of fuel/tyres etc.

They are really good, a friend has triplets (boys) + an older daughter.. It works for them and they take it all over the place.

Used to have a separate van, but now have company car allowance and fuel card, so maximising the use of my main vehicle is the aim!

Must admit, hadn't thought bout the petrol smells from the bike lingering - may be worth keeping the trailer!
