I am not very PC savvy but last month i bought a 3d smart TV and 3d blu ray player.
I do like to watch a good film but i am not a believer in collecting a video library as i only tend to watch films once unless it is years apart then maybe twice.
Being new to 3d i bought 4 DVDs to watch over Christmas, although fantastic to watch they are rather expensive :-( .
On a recent google search there seems to be a guy selling 40 odd 3d blu ray movies on a memory stick, they appear to be very good value. Am i right in thinking this technology is not able to be copied and stored on usb or disc for that matter.
I also take on board the ethics of such purchases but do wonder as to the legitimacy of the said advert.

Yes. 3d movies are digital files like any other movie.

How big is the memory stick? If it's got 40 films on it, then at maybe 30 Gb+ per film then it's got to be pretty big, I make that 1200Gb, so I'm guess that they are compressed to pieces if it's a 64Gb stick. I'd argue that they don't even qualify as HD despite the pixels, the bit rate will be abysmal.

If you don't want to buy discs outright, why not just rent monthly from Blockbuster or Lovefilm? I'm with BB and get 3 discs at a time for £15.99 a month. I watch 3 discs a week so works out little more than £1 a film and being the full BluRay they still look good on my projector unlike a compressed dodgy copy would...

Well, pirated 3d movies can be as small as 1.5GB from a 3 second search, so they don't need to be full size rips.

But to answer the second part of your question, multiple 3d movies on a USB stick is almost certainly a bit "moody".

Depends on how big your tv is, I have 50", I wouldn't use a back-up file below 2.5gb as there's not enough quality in the file size.

Exactly my point: 3D 'DVDs' (actually BluRays of course) would need perhaps 20-30Gb for a whole 3D film. SO if they are compressed down to 1.5Gb then this is less than a typical DVD which could be up to around 4Gb. If you think that a BluRay crushed down to this size produces acceptable quality, then you might as well just buy the DVD version (apart from 3D of course). rolleyes Given that 3D requires a much higher data rate to give the effect then 3D rips down to 1.5Gb would probably look awful no matter what size your TV is...

We seem to be slipping down a 'never mind the quality, so long as you have a large collection' path. Everytime I read about how discs will die out it concerns me: I'd hate to think that we get to a download only state where the quality drops below what we currently have rather than better. Having seen upscaled BluRay on a 4K projector, I know that one day I'd like a true 4K source to enjoy on such a projector, not a crushed down less than DVD quality rip, regardless of legal issues (I'm against ripping myself, but that's not the main point of this thread).

Just giving him info. Don't kill the messenger. 40 films on a memory stick is in now way legal regardless so it is up to him as to compromise.

Sorry I misread your earlier post as if you thought I didn't know the size that a BluRay can be ripped to so I was just following up on that comment, then went off on a rant about how I'm worried about the slipping of quality with downloads and ripping. smile

Seems possible then albeit very unlikely to be up to original quality,
I think i will have to join block buster again and rent at will.
I have purchased a 3d film from one of the online stores from the lg app within the TV but my Internet seemed to bulk at the task in hand and failed miserably.
