Route through france

Hi

Going to Le Mans for the first time this year with a couple of mates.
Just looked at the travel time with google maps and it shows 7 toll or partial toll roads on the route.

Anyone know what these are likely to cost or if it pricey is there a decent route without a fortune in tolls?

if you just want to get there the tools are a quick way down and won't cost a fortune, sure it was 30/40 quid last year on way home, took the back roads down which was nice but a lot slower.

Where are you crossing to? From Calais or the tunnel there's 2 sections of toll road, Bolougne-Alencon and Rouen-Le Mans, both are easily enough avoided if you want to

Toll routes are quick, but soooooooooooo dull.

Go for the non-toll national routes if you have time, much more interesting.

Does take more time though.

if your in a rush the tolls are worth it, it works out to about 10c per KM of toll road, i driven france a lot and love it, nice and empty easy to drive and keep your speed up, and the french have good motorway manners
also drove to spain avoiding the tolls, it takes longer and you will drive further
so to me its a bit of 6 of one half dozen of the other
if you can make a day of it and dont mind stopping for lunch, take the back roads and see a bit of france

I could be going via Portsmouth, any idea on the route and time it would take please?

Portsmouth to where? Couple of hours from Caen, a bit longer from St Malo, think it's about 3 from Cherbourg but haven't been that way myself

If you are traveling from Calais the toll between Bologne and abberville is quick and cheap about 9 euro's i think, the toll after rouen is not worth paying take the old d438 and it is quicker, free and a much nicer route

gt6 is quite right, Abbeville not Alencon, easily enough avoided, but it's only a short cheap section
