Over the last month or so I've had very cool running - Engine temp gauge barely getting off the stopper and only lukewarm air from the heater. Its just been in to the garage for a service and they diagnosed a faulty stat so it was replaced.

Despite this I'm still getting the same problem, if anything its running even colder now. The temp gauge didnt even move off the stopper for 10 miles (65 cruise on the motorway) today and eventually settled at just over 50 with only warm ish air from the heater. It got warmer (but not really hot) when I was sat in traffic for a few minutes.

Could I have an airlock in the heater and the gauge is just being useless (as it often is!) or could this be something else ?

Heater hot air control valve was also replaced at the service as I was only able to get hot (well ok warm) air out of the vents.

Dodsy, had same problem last year, see gasket thread on this page, ran cool in cold weather on motorways but warmed up in traffic, changed stat to higher opening temp and it improved but still has a tendency to run cool if the ambiant temp is low, however my heater was nice and hot whatever the gauge said, you could check hose and rad temps with a cheapy laser thermometer from maplins that will discount a dicky gauge, could your heater matrix be blocked giving poor flow ? I would check engine temps 1 st

I was thinking the same about checking the actual engine temp - I need to wait for a dry day then get my Mrs to drive the car while I check the ECU temp sender with my ECUmate - I am thinking it may be a problem with the heater matrix too.
