I always swore I'd never start a What Car? thread...

I'm that > < close to buying a CLS55 AMG, but before I do, just wondered if there is anything else I should consider.

The Merc seems to push all the buttons, namely...

1) £10-15k
2) Petrol
3) V8
4) Ample performance
5) Plush

Whatever I go for will be used for long trips only, and only once/twice a month. Fuel consumption isn't an issue, nor is depreciation. Reliability is.

No Americans, 300bhp/tonne; they're my passion, but only used weekends and for enjoyment. BMW's do nothing for me. Had a 645Ci last year and it left me cold and uninterested...

Using 1)-5) above, any suggestions?

Monaro or VXR8? Lots of fun and proper manliness for proper men. You will be respected.

Was considered, but I've scratched that itch. I had a Maloo a while back, which had broadly the same running gear. I'd like something a little more luxurious TBH.

ok, but a VXR8 is a pretty nice place to be. Fair play for the Maloo.

I was going to suggest an X350 XJR but there seem to be very few out there that are on low miles and within budget

All within striking range of Dorset (set search to 60 miles around Dorchester as I used a hotel postcode), you mention Dorset on your profile so went with that location.

Audi S8 - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...
M5 (bit leggy) - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...
E55 - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Or something a little left field smile - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

I drive a Discovery 3 every day (currently on 118k miles) and it's great. Keep on top of niggles, service it to the letter and you will be fine. Seriously, it won't be cheap but don't fear it.

You say no to BMW's but your criteria seems to also fit a late BMW 840 Ci Sport. They are very different to you 645 in a good way. They have presence on the road and I think they look great too in a sea of blandness that can sometimes be found out on today's roads. You may be pleasantly suprised.

Edit - just noticed that you said cls not cl, therefore my suggestion doesn't really make much sense. Do you really need 4 doors and back seats?

Nope, nope, nope, stick as you are! The CLS55 is an awseome machine, it beats the rest hands down! Wish I was in the same position to buy something like that.
