belgium f1 at spa 2013
Discussion
me and a mate are looking at finally doing this this year, he's been abroad loads but ive never been anywhere other than ireland, so complete novice.
has anyone here ever been, or done f1 abroad anywhere, and got any advice that might come in useful.
ive gotta start by getting a passport which will be fun.
looking at driving it, bit of a top gear road trip kinda thing, so would like to take in some sights and have fun basically
is there the facility to camp near the track anywhere or is it all hotels

My brother and I are heading there this year for the first time.
We're camping just outside the circuit - no idea what the campsite will be like but should be close to the atmosphere going by the write ups we've read. I can find the details of the campsite if that's how you plan to do it?
We're driving down on the Thursday morning, direct to the campsite to get set up.
Tickets have already been bought (10%) cheaper for buying before the end of January, again I can link to the website we used if you need it, but don't forget we've not been before so no idea if its all going to work out yet!

would really appreciate the camping info.
were looking at driving to hull on thursday and ferry over thursday night to get there friday morning then arrive at the circuit around midday all being well on the friday. travel back monday.
im guessing you never buy general admission because of the changeable weather?? surely thats part of the fun, take a brolly just incase and should be fine.

A brolly?
More often than not the camping and general admission areas turn into Glastonbury on a bad year. If thats your thing then go for it. Not for me. The last thing I want to be is up to my neck in slimy mud.
We camp here, http://www.campingspador.be/ardens/offers/formula_...
Much nicer than the temporary campsites that the farmers make up around the circuit.

I have camped in both the green and yellow camp sight, great atmosphere in both. However the yellow was a shorter walk in to the village. Be ready for rain and it will rain, at least one while you are there. My top tips would be stay Sunday night and avoid the traffic. It also gives you enough time to walk a lap as well.
ps its a lot hillier than it looks on TV.

I'm going to counter the above. Of all the races, Spa doesn't require a grandstand seat. The atmosphere and view above Pouhon is beyond compare. You can explore the rest of the track during the practice days. Just take appropriate clothing and a brolley - it's loads more fun and you'll save £250 into the bargain.

I've used Grandstand Motorsports for several trips and they're excellent. If you want a feel for the event, I'm written the 2012 event up in some detail and put it in a thread here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
And don't forget Monza is the weekend after...

I don't really know why you would restrict yourself to a single seat at somewhere like Spa, there are a lot better views in general admission areas.
I've been the last two years, last year we set off late Wednesday night, got the 2am ferry and made an early stop in Brugge for a bit of sight seeing and fresh croissants.
We then went to the track for the driver signing session which is worth doing. Then it was off to our cottage place for the weekend. It was in the hills and a really nice place, there were 5 of us there and cost about £250 for the week so cheaper than camping.
The roads from the house to the track were nice and flowing so was always an enjoyable experience going to and from the circuit.
We then spent the monday at the Nurburgring for a few laps, which is when you realise how slow your car actually is! Then spent Tuesday in Luxembourg and then had to go home on wednesday

Been to Spa about 8 times. Really good and the spectating is much closer to the circuit than elsewhere. Get a covered stand for the race, but make sure you try other areas, like Pouhon, the double left. Have used MRI in the past and always been very organised and efficient tours. Past time, drove over, taking the 3am tunnel crossing. Gets you to Spa just in time for 1st practice, if you push on a bit. Stayed in Liege the last couple of times, which is about half an hour on Major roads. On race day, get there early as traffic is not good and leave late. Get food in Francorchamps on way in to the circuit in the morning to get good sandwiches at reasonable prices.
