Heffner Ultima
Discussion
Has anyone seen this Ford-engined Ultima from Heffner Performance? It looks pretty nicely done. Twin cam engines do have something about them.
Tornado sportscars (GT40 replica builders) offer the complete motor for about 7 or 8k (I can't remember which). 400ish bhp, I believe. Has anyone considered this powerplant?
I wonder if Heffners have included the rear wishbone mount stiffeners?

Quad cams take up a lot of space, but I assume (though I haven't checked) that the Fords can rev high, so the Getrag gearboxes would at least have useful gearing compared to a redundant first gear (and second?) when used with Chevy motors. The one in the photos has the Ford GT gearbox. I bet that's expensive.

I was given quite decent prices in the u.s. for Ford GT boxes a couple of years ago, but I seem to remember they are a heavy lump.chuntington101 said:
Wow that looks stunning!
Ford Mods motors can be made to rev, however they dont too well from the factory. LS can rev just as high as the Ford.
Yes, nicely done, with a cool colour scheme.Ford Mods motors can be made to rev, however they dont too well from the factory. LS can rev just as high as the Ford.
I thought one had to spend quite a bit of money on the Chevys to make them rev; rockers, valve springs, cam, etc. The Mustang 5litre motor will rev to 7,000rpm as standard and still conforms to Euro5 standards. I think it weighs nearly 200kg (probably undressed), so a little heavier than the Chevy.

oh no that is the intercooler the intake of the turbo is ending in 2 90 degree bends waiting for an air box and more piping
Ah yes, you're correct. I bet they've thought of that before coming to this stage, though. I hope so, anyway.I've just read up a bit about the motors. They can safely rev to 7500rpm, but should take 7300rpm "all day". They (obviously) need some other mods for forced induction, as do Chevys. I wonder what the top speeds in the various gears on the Getrags that would give.
The gearboxes seem difficult to find, and I only heard of one for sale for 16,000 Dollars. They're made by Ricardo.
It would be easier to use the Getrag 'boxes since there are already adaptors available.
There is a Can-Am in Cambridge with that transmission attached to a twin turbo 454 SBC with 800hp.
The box is a bit heavier and requires chassis modifications to fit in the Ultima.
The engineering involved in building the car is very impressive but when that boost kicks in I suspect your buttock muscles get a work-out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Athough the abiity for each owner to scratch his own itch when it comes to engine choice is a hallmark of the Ultima product, I think the photo here is a classic example of 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound bag. The work was obviously done by very resourcefull folks with lots of fabricating equipment and talent. The end product is stunning. That said, take a hard look at the pictures do you really want to work on this? How do you get to the plugs? how many items do you need to remove to get to what you are after? Sunday I wanted to look at the plugs on my LS powered GTR, In 5 minutes I had removed and replaced 3 plugs all was well and I was on my way. Three years ago when I upgraded the engine to dry sump and Kinsler I had the engine out on a stand in 3.5 hours by myself. My point being to new builders: there is a place for this kind of car in our community and we are all thrilled to see someone go to this lenght to realize his dream. But if you don't have serious talent and or very deep pockets what you see above could move you from a dream to a nightmare. These cars are blindingly quick with 500 hp even that is a bit high. If you don't fall in the really talented or really rich segment buy yourself a dry sumped ls3 or ls7 do a few mods if the smog laws will let you and go forward. Just my opinion backed by 45 years of motorhead endevors wondering when I am ass deep in aligators why I wanted to drain the swap in the first place. P.S. If ego is pushing you to this kind of power go get a Ferrari. Only a very few people will know what you have done and the Ferrari has some resale value. When you spend this kind of money on a GTR you will never see the money again. Lee
