Hi, my Mk1 loves to aquaplane more than any car I've had previous. Even a slight puddle needs full grip on the wheel.

Is this normal of MX5s?

Or maybe it's more a tyre issue. I have Yokohama tyres that have plenty of tread.

Describe tbe problem. Never had to grip the wheel harder for aquaplaning. You're not talking about tramlining are you?

If I hit a puddle on the N/S the front really gets pulled over to that side. If I didn't hold on tight I would probably end up in the hedge. frown

That's really not aquaplaning....

Think it's a trait of Mx5s. Wider the size tyre over standard the worse it is. I'm thinking also a lower offset wheel would be worse?

I'd imagine that's a consequence of front toe-in and tyres that aren't designed to be fantastic on standing water. Lift one wheel (due to the water not dispersing quickly enough) and the other wheel steers the car.

Compared to most cars MX5s have responsive steering and that means that you feel everything that the tyres encounter. When you hit a deep puddle, that creates additional drag acting on that wheel and the steering tugs in your hands accordingly. If the tyre was aquaplaning, it would be floating on the surface of the puddle and you wouldn't get the same pull on the steering. In fact, if both front wheels aquaplane then the steering goes completely light. However, while MX5s are fairly light, they're not feather weights and they shouldn't be especially prone to aquaplaning.

All else being equal, narrow tyres cut through standing water better than wide ones but my view is that for road cars (as opposed to track cars) the critical thing is to have tyres with good wet weather performance.

Definitely sounds like the alignment is out. Does it also feel like it jumps sideways a bit on bumps/rough roads?

another thing to check is tyre pressure. If its too high it will be worse in the wet. Should be around 26 psi.

P.S. I've never seen a Yoko tyre that was even reasonably good on wet roads.

I have Uniroyal Rainsports on my MX5 and I feel pretty happy with them, they give good grip in the rain.

That sounds like completely normal car behaviour to me.

My MX5's do it, my mums MINI does it, my missus Suzuki swift does it.

My Dads Discovery does not do it.

Correlation? All are light cars hitting something with more friction/drag than the road, which means you're pulled towards it.

it's definitely not aquaplaning and isn't a tyre issue.

Cheers for the input, I guess it is like most cars but it just feels magnified in the Eunos. But then I guess everything does.

I'll try different tyres when I come to change see if that improves it any.

O/T I've just changed the rears for Dunlop Fast-Response anybody had experience of these, they seem good so far. I think I'll put these on the front also.

Those Dunlops were my tyre of choice. I really liked them and they seemed to do well at taking commuting miles combined with the odd trackday. I think I got 20,000 miles and 3 trackdays out of them. I think they were as good as the Goodyear F1 GSD2 they replaced, but quieter.

Its a light car, its going to move about.
A bit scary sometimes I agree but hold tight and the feeling of relief when you've made it through the puddle makes you feel EPIC !!

Sounds like someone else needs to get their alignment sorted & tyre pressures checked. An MX5 shouldn't feel any different to any other car through puddles, on wet roads etc. They aren't that light - my 2003 mini Cooper is lighter than my 2001 MX5.
