Yes sorry in advance this is another what car thread. Even worse it is for a 4/5 door diesel family commuter car.

Here are the necessary criteria;

£8000.
Upto 4 years old.
No more than 80000 miles, would prefer no more than 60000.
Has to have at least 4 doors for car seat access.
Good size boot.
Will be driving 20000 approx miles a year (hence preference for diesel, though I am open to persuave arguments that I could survive with a petrol)

So far I have looked at the below cars;

Ford Mondeo.
Vauxhall Insignia.
Volvo S40.
Seat Exeo.

As an outsider Mazda 6.

This would be to replace a VW Passat Estate 130bhp Sport PD TDi (remapped), so because of that wouldn't want the slowest model in the range, for instance have been looking at the 160 Insignia's.

I am not totally adverse to older higher mileage more premium makes, but the Passat is possibly going due to it getting old and tired. Which means its faults are starting to add up, poss turbo fault, front shocks leaking, wheel bearings, vacumn pipes leaking multiple of, intercooler pipes leaking multiple of, and various other things that may make it uneconomical to fix.

So while I understand the opinion that higher mileage cars that are well maintained wont necessarily cost more, I also now understand that eventually things will break with age and these issues will multiply every year as well. Hence looking for a lower mileage car to start with (Passat bought with 85000 odd miles on the clock).

I now open this discussion to the floor, please be gentle!

You may as well burn the £8k as put it into a diesel Mazda 6.

Right I will forget about that one then, it was an outside choice to be fair, can you elaborate on their faults, is it from personal experience?

Alfa 159?

No idea how it compares to the other stuff youve listed but it looks miles better than any of them.

Edited to add another couple of quid could get you one in Ti flavour which is a very nice looking car.
