hi all,

to cut a long story short , my little sis(21 years old) just passed her test and desperate to have her own car she saved up a couple of grand asked me to help her buy a car, before i had time to reply to her text shes been out with my younger silly brother and bought a 03 1.2 corsa for £2200 with no tax no history scraps and light scratches wheel arch trim looking like someones tried cleaning it with acid! pulls to left to the point where you have to hold the steering 10 degrees to the right, fob key dont work and they paid full asking price.
Bought from a foriegn hand car wash lot ! where do we stand ? can she take it back and ask for problems to be sorted? full refund would be best! although i doubt we could do that.anyone with any advice please?

Best option is to sell it cheaply, maybe at auction? And then use the £500 (or maybe more) to buy a old snotter that will be better condition than the car she has.

By the sound of things, they'll struggle to make the £500 selling that heap through an auction. She would be better off taking it back to the car wash and trying to get the cash back over the steering issue.

OP, how stupid is your sister?

Shes bought it now. Your only hope is to try to get the sellers to fix the steering. Cant see there being much wrong with it.

Other than that it sounds ok. wheel arch trims can be sprayed, key fobs can be fixed on ebay for about £20.

Shes paid wayyyy over the odds but whats done is done.

The replies on this site or infact most forums seem to be getting worse.

Firstly go with the car to where it was bought from and explain the issues, you might get no where but worth a try.

Secondly wheel alignment shouldnt cost the earth to sort and check the tyre condition.

The rest is cosmetic so she will have to live with it

Was this considered a private or trade sale?

If the former, there's no comeback. Buyer beware and all that jazz.

With the latter, my understanding is that the car needs to be 'fit for purpose'.

There are some very odd replies in this thread...

I don't have anything helpful to add other than good luck OP!

Indeed! Ultimate problem though is the OP inviting comment. Hardly the worst mistake in the world, so don't seek solace or advice in here.
Glad you see the errors of your ways.

Crikey, what's the beef some people have with eachother at the moment(?) OP is merely using this board as intended; a 'forum', by definition:

'A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged'.

Anyway, just the very title of this made me giggle. OP; Your sister is indeed daft as a brush, hopefully this episode is a first and a last time. The pulling is obviously the biggy that needs addressing, how long is the MoT? Chances are it's a knackered arm. I'd get it up on ramps and get a mechanic to confirm, and then straight back to the carwash ASAPish. Kindly inform them that it's not a wash+wax you're looking for...

Reminder to the thread followers - topic "sister buys pile of st" (sic)

Kind of invited negative comments maybe?

Use your eyes, aresholes.
Nope, seemed to be asking for advice.

You just seem to be looking to hassle people on here, going by some of your other posts.

Cheerio.
Yep. I can't see him/her lasting much longer.

1.2 corsa = the no 1 choice for young buyers and that price is around what they sell for.

They went and viewed and then paid the asking price there is nothing to be done about that deal has been done and it's not for you to change that now.

Tracking adjust may cure steering - that will only cost you £25 at your local tyre shop.

No history = is it clocked ? A vosa MOT history check and HPI check will show its recent mileage history if it's got the wrong mileage or cat D or C the maybe you can push to get your money back but unlikely.

Check it's not got wet carpets as they often leak like a sieve in this weather and it can be tricky to fix.

I think the first thing is to establish whether this was a private sale or not. Did she get a receipt? Is this a registered car dealership or just a bunch of low lifes peddling st cars "privately"?

If it was sold as trade she has effective 6 months (IIRC) where the onus is on the dealer to prove the defect was not present at the point of sale. I.e. They have to fix it because it's not fit for purpose.

As for the bodywork, this was clearly visible at the time of sale and they went ahead anyway. Same goes for the rubbish price. It's simply just a bad deal. I don't think you've got a hope there in any instance.

Give them a ring about the mechanical issues and give them a chance. Then advise them you'll have no choice but to pursue it through citizens advice to seek legal action if they don't remedy the car. Remember it's important to be nice at this stage.

If the sale was private, you know you've no hope. I'd suggest having a mechanic look at the damage. It could just be badly kerbed and need the tracking done. The bodywork can be tarted up to make the most of a bad situation. Just don't spend more than it's worth.

Some people won't be helped and want to "do it for themselves" even when (as it sounds happened here) this means they but a poor car.

I'd get onto the garage about the steering, and leave it at that. Trying to convince people you are right when they don't want to be told is often more trouble than it's worth.

OP; how violently is the car pulling? If it's a pretty strong pull I don't know if having it tracked will be the answer.

For all you know, it could have taken a knock against a kerb in the recent snow, resulting in a bent arm, or even worse; a bent subframe. If you're on good terms with an indy who has a ramp, I'd get a once-over done first before needlessly paying Kwik-Fit for tracking. Just a thought!

Cue another negative post, incomprehensible to anyone other than the author. If only we all could reach such intellectual heights one day..

Anyway, good luck OP. Experience is a good teacher, perhaps she'll take much more care next time, and ends up with something nice. I hear MX5's are a good bet these days!

Hang on a sec, so ig the car has got the wrong milage or is cat D/C you just "might" get your money back? i thought the entire point of buying from a "dealer" was that you are protected against this sort of thing?
