Hi there. I’m looking for some advice regarding a potential career change. In short, i’m 27 and want to change my career to one in the moter industry.
I went to school, college and managed one year at university before leaving education. I’m quite academic so was pushed towards academic subjects rather than hands on or trade subjects, which, in hindsight was a mistake as I have a passion for cars. For the past few years I have been working as a building manager but I dont really enjoy it and cannot imagine spending the next 40 years of my life doing it.
My goal would be to have a classic car restoration/servicing business, however I have no experience at all in the motor industry so to get anywhere I would have to start at the bottom and work my way up.
I have checked the local colleges and have enrolled on a basic car maintenance evening class, however this is a short part time course and I would need to go into full time education to get anywhere.
My major concerns would be returning to education and the effect it would have on my life. I wanted to ask if anyone had done something similar and how they had managed it. The courses are “Full time” – are you able to work while doing these courses? There is no way my girlfriend and I would be able to manage on her salary alone so I would need to have some income. My other thought would be to approach a local independant garage and ask if I could work with them for a day or two a week unpaid, meaning I could keep my job and gain experience without it direcly costing them. Does anybody think this would be something they would be likely to agree too.

Think laterally maybe - how about getting on an apprenticeship scheme with a large engineering concern? Ok, it's probably not going to be automotive right away but it's paid, and offers training and development that is easily transferable.
