Hi Guys, yesterday I picked up a lovely 1993 525 TDS Touring that I purchased on ebay. Drives beautifully and seems to be in excellent condition. I put it in for MOT today and it has failed on a leak from the diesel pump, which is situated on the left hand side of the engine under the intake manifold. It passed on everything else but when the engine is warm you can see it dripping from underneath the pump.

I have taken the car over to a local diesel specialist for an initial investigation, but I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this type of repair and how much I am going to have to bend over to get it right?

Thanks in advance,

Ollie

Update - The diesel specialist just rang me, quoting £500+ VAT for the pump rebuild and 6hrs labour = £330.

Actually gutted.

what is actually leaking on the pump? if they didn't say I would ask them, it may be something simple that you can sort out yourself.

  • EDIT* are they rebuilding the pump or sending it out? if they're sending it out the labour for them to change the pump shouldn't be anymore than 3 hours MAX.

I think they're sending it out.

My last tiny glimmer of hope is to inspect the leak off pipes on top and see if the leak is coming from there rather than the actual pump.

They are known for doing that after a few miles. It's the weak spot on an otherwise very good engine.
Shop around for the repair work- there will be specialists who know the pumps well enough to replace only the worn parts rather than rebuilding the whole pump or providing an exchange unit. The same engine was used in Range Rovers so it's probably worth talking to some RR specialists too.

I'm in Hampshire. The car failed the MOT on the diesel leak so I'm up against the fact that it has no tax or ticket either frown
