Brown nosing....... Acceptable?
Discussion
I am going away for the next few days on a business trip for a trade show with my MD and Director.
Previously in other roles I have always played the "rebellious" type (you know the ones) who will stand by my fellow colleagues whatever happens and not care whos fault anything is/ was..... as it is ALWAYS the bosses
Anyway, back on point, recently since starting my job last August I want to settle down and be successful and so these next few days opens up an opportunity for some brown nosing close to the level of extreme.
There is a job opening up quite a significant way above my current pay grade that i feel i would suit perfectly.
I know a lot of my colleagues are also fishing for my job and i have started taking the mentality thats its a dog-eat-dog world out there and they would do me no favours.
Would you grasp the opportunity for some brown nosing of epic proportions, trying to get yourself this role or would you play the "cool kid?" i have already decided what I am going to do
hint..... I want the job!
What would you do?

Its not necessarily about brown nosing, but about demonstrating that you have the skillset they are looking for to fit the role. Thats true both proffesionally and informally, and often the latter is as, if not more, important. That doesnt necessarily mean brown nosing.
You have the ideal platform from which to do so for both, why not make the most of the opportunity.
Dependant on the role and the individuals, getting drunk and offering coke and hookers may / may not be a good strategy....
Let us know how it goes

Don't brown nose. It's unlikely that he's dim enough to not realise what you're up to, and it'll seem a bit pathetic.
Speak to him about the role. Tell him you're very interested in it, and explain why you think you're so well suited to it.
Or, at least, that's what I'd do. Worked for me.
I'd second that. And no, I'm not hoping doogz can give me a job! Speak to him about the role. Tell him you're very interested in it, and explain why you think you're so well suited to it.

You've got a brilliant opportunity to let your bosses see how good you could be. Don't waste it by trying to tell them how good you think they are.
Toughie, but there shouldn't really be any need to brown-nose.
I've been promoted 3 times in as many years at my place and never felt the need to kiss ass. Generally, just proving you can do a job and provide sound reasons for a particular course of action is more than enough.
I've been out on the lash with my Director a few times and once I got very drunk, we went to a strip club and then got my line manager to drive us back to the hotel while we sang 'Paint It Black' at the tops of our voices.
Proving you're not a knob usually works better than brown nosing

I agree. Just make sure you have chosen the most opportune moment to do so.Speak to him about the role. Tell him you're very interested in it, and explain why you think you're so well suited to it.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it is not alcohol induced, it can be career ending if you are not careful.
I definitely wouldn't brown nose though, nobody respects a brown nosed yes man. Just be yourself and if the opportunity arises, express your interest in the job in question.
Maybe they are taking you with them to see how you perform before offering you the job, so no pressure there then. This could be your one and only chance to shine.

Do you not have the ability to just get along with them naturally?
I do get on with them, its quite a small workplace so everyone gets on with everyone else.I realise "brown-nosing" isn't the term i specifically mean, more, making it crystal clear that I am the man for the job.
I already excell in my current role so that works in my favour

I would never put anyone down.... afterall I have to work with my colleagues, who I get on well with. Its just that in previous roles i would not have snapped at the opportunity, but ow have the mindset that I will make it clear I'm their guy
It depends so much on the environment you are going to be in because it can easily come across as cringeworthy and inappropriate if in the wrong context, or done in the wrong way.
If they raise it directly and have you in mind, then go for your life.
If it is raised for other reasons, and you make unsubtle hints and 'jokes' then you can do more harm than good.
