Looking at a 328 touring tomorrow. It's a 1996 with 120k on the clock, tan leather interior, with about 5 months tax and test on it.

Had a quick look around it this evening (parked at the side of the road), there only seemed to be minimal bubbling on the archs and it generally looked solid. Its missing a wing mirror plastic and the kidney bean grill has been bent in.

Is there anything to look out for on this car, mechanical wise?

its up for £800, so i suppose i can't expect it to be perfect.

If you can manage a really good look around for rust, I'd do it. Also just standard things - tracking etc.

Automatic or manual?

If you can see bubbling on the outside of the arches it's possible they could be hiding a lot worse as they tend to go inside out!? Because people fail to clean out the inner lips which then work their evil. Certainly rust is the key to whether the car is viable. Haggle hard on the rust if you go for it. Engines are usually cheaper to fix permanently! This car will have the earlier Nikasil, which is a contentious issue (google it if you aren't aware). Also the Cooling System needs to be well maintained, with the water-pump replaced for metal impeller type if not done already. For me though they are great cars as long as you can get one that has fastidious service history and owners who had the funds to maintain it properly throughout its life.. Standard spec a good indicator. Some real, bargains out there at the moment though, not much better cheap performance cars around. There are a lot out there so you can be choosey

Its a manual, hoping the clutch was done fairly recently - will need to check.

Managed to rope in two mates to have a gander at it, both have owned e36's, one is a mechanic, in fact his dads garage is in the same village as where the car is, so may see if i can get it up on the ramp.

Yeh, it is completely bogo, which is a good thing i suppose, until i go ahead and ruin it with coilies (won't be slammed though!!), an m50 manifold, maybe a lsd and some nice 16/17" bmw alloys from that era.

Check for any clunking from the rear when pulling away and also when changing gear, I had one where the diff mounting points pulled through the floor and cracked the bodywork. Apparently its quite common on the 6 cylinder models.

Vanos rattle. At standstill rev to 1800-2200rpm. If its failed will sound like marbles rattling in a tin from under the cam chain cover.

Ended up buying it, paintwork is tatty but there is zero rust.

Front bushes need looking at, no dash warning lights, seemed to pull well, everything electric still works ect

Very little service history and receipts, but seems like a solid car, with a genuine reason for sale.

Got it for £550.

so even if i have to weigh it in, i can only really lose £350. (fingers crossed haha)

I picked up a 323i saloon last week, 160,000 miles ONE owner from new, heated leather seats, dual climate control, sunroof, parking sensors, everything works!! Even if it does come with a cassette player for.......£195!!! Stupidly cheap cars at the moment!

No, £200, hence worst case scenario 'losing' £350
