I am officially getting old. I want a quiet car. Really quiet and peaceful. V12 Rolls Royces aside, what is good?

Lexus GS450h is virtually silent - what's your budget?

Common wisdom says that a Lexus is hard to beat, though any barge should do it.

My E38 is probably rated as the loudest of the quiet cars, though tyre noise is the only issue with it,above 130mph you get a bit of wind noise too but it's still remarkably quiet.

Vauxhall Ampera - I remember getting into it the first time and wondering why we were going backwards without the engine running.

What he said. Any barge will do the job, Lexi top of the silent tree, S Class Mercs, BMWs less so due to the slightly 'sporty' nature of them perhaps. Most big barges these days are dervs, which spoils the party somewhat at idle, especially when cold.

We have a Prius at work and the lack of engine noise is simply replaced with the noise of tyre roar and stones flicking up into the floorpan. It is hated by all at the company to the point we try to book out the woeful 1.2 Corsa where possible.

Best I've been in was a previous generation S-class V6 petrol. It was certainly better than the 7-series and A8 of the same generation. Never been in an LS, though.

Oh, go for small wheels too. The massive cross section 18s on my 7er do it no favours for waft.

An old XJ6 is probably ideal

An XJ8 is quieter and more refined than an XJ6. Both cars make a surprising amount of wind noise at higher speeds, but by far the biggest source of noise is tyre roar and whine. This varies a lot between brands, amount of wear and pressures you choose. Most XJs I've driven - possibily because they are pretty quiet - have a hint of transmission noise audible at lower speeds too.

Mitsubishi iMiev. Makes the sound of a (very quiet) washing machine motor at 50mph, practically silent below that.

Surely the MX5 with the roof down. You can barely hear the car above the wind noise? wink
