Hi,
I'm new to this!

I cought a 51 plate 2.0L diesel 206 in October and about a month (if that) later it started having problems starting in the cold initially. It was under warranty but the garage went bust and never paid the fee so we had it in a local garage (replaced battery first which improved it a little), the garage then thought it must be the alternator as there was a little discharge so my fiance has since changed the alternator and put in a new starter motor as he thought it was a combination of problems.

Since all this work just over a week ago the car had been fine however this morning it was comletely flat again?!

I'm really stuck with wehat to do next as the car has cost me over £2000 since october and I am skint so can't afford a new one or even an old one!

can anybody help please?

thanks

It could be a faulty electrical earth or some dodgey wiring that's draining the battery, had something similar. Your best bet is to get an auto electrican to try and trace the fault.

It sounds as though something is drawing power continuously, even when the ignition is switched off.

Of course, the immobiliser / alarm will do this - but the power draw should be that low that a good battery will be ok for a couple of weeks or more.

I would get someone to measure how much current is being drawn off the battery with everything switched off and key out of the ignition.

You could have a faulty boot light switch - leaving the light in the boot on all the time, or a faulty radio, or.....

And easy check is to open the boot and feel if the lamp is warm right away - if it is, there's your culprit.

Apparantly its a dodgy battery after all that ! The alternator was a bit buggered before too but even the new batterys dodgy! So were sending it back and hopefully fingers crossed a new one should sort it. Fed up of all the hassle now! Cheers for the advice :-)

A 2.0 diesel makes it a HDi doesn't it?

Has it been starting OK when there was a bit of heat in the engine?

It was when it started getting colder around end of november when it started haopening and it was worse in the cold I think but got to the stage when it was randomly intermittent even when not that cold. Weve sent the battery back to the online company so just waiting to hear from them as they test it too.

How is it not starting?

Does it crank over and over?
Have the glow plugs been checked?

Aah. I asked because I've a Xsara HDi that was a bit rubbish starting when cold. It would build up cranking speed over a few seconds before finially firing into life.
But after changing the starter motor (for one on ebay, 1.7kw vs the original 1.4 (or was it 1.3?)) it made a massive difference, the cranking speed is just there straight away and so the car starts much much quicker.

My dads 307 hdi had this problem - garage put a brand new battery on it and it fixed for about a week.

Tried a new starter motor (a bigger one) which help for about 3 days and same again.

The plugs were 2 months old but changed them anyway - still the same.

Turns out the garage but a really low rated battery on it so it was killing it within a few days. Que correct amp battery and never had a problem since.
