Folks,

Recently acquired BF3 and am absolutely loving it, however starting to get a little bored of the existing MP maps.

I am, obviously, rather late to the party and don't fully understand how the expansion packs work.

What's the best "package" to buy for it that I'll get most MP maps in, most bang for buck?

Cheers,

Sam

On PS3 but assume exactly the same for X-box. Easiest way forward is to get Premium. This gives you access to all the map packs + early access to the last one to come out in March (End Game) also gives you access to additional assignments that may or may not interest you. Most people on here seem to have gone this route, the only thing you lose by coming to it late is the early access. If you choose not to go the premium route, there are following DLC’s already available:

Back to Karkand – this may or may not be with your original game – if you can access Karkand, Oman, Wake Island – you’ve got it already. Good all round maps.
Close Quarters – small infantry maps – play style similar to COD
Armoured Kill – huge maps, vehicle focused.
Aftermath – like Back to Karkand good all round maps.

Premium is probably the best bet, all map packs and some shops are selling BF3 premium on xbox for £28 (Game in MK had it there this weekend).

Go premium or go home. Good value for money, but tbh I don't know if I'd rather wait for BF4, coming this late in the day. The game is noticeably harder than it was say, 6 months ago. There are very few n00bs online now, most games I play are made exclusively of colonel rank players (so you are looking at perhaps 80 hours minimum) so most of your opponents will be pretty experienced.

As for the map packs, here are my views;

Back to Karkand - maps are not amazing, apart from Gulf of Oman which is great for some epic games. Some of the games I've had on this map have stretched out to beyond 2 hours, truly massive battles.

Close Quarters - Close, tight maps with plenty of flanking opportunities. Good for power leveling your soldier and unlocking gun upgrades quickly. Ziba tower is ace, Scrap metal is st, Operation 9-5 is a mint map but hardly ever comes up in the playlist. I Got BF3 when CQ came out, and I've played 150 hours on it, and only ever been on the Operation 9-5 map maybe twice.

Armored Kill - huge maps for vehicle combat. Not much fun imo, would be better with more players, but the 360 only supports 32 per match. If you like the vehicles you will love it though.

Aftermath - set in an earthquake-hit Iran, lots of jagged collapsed buildings, multi-level fighting, good spots for sniping and close fighting. The vehicles can be pretty fun on these maps too. Imo these are the best in the game.

As I say, it's the best shooter out there by miles, and if you've already got it you might as well just go Premium now. I'm slowly scaling back my playing, to get some time away and build excitement for BF4, whenever it arrives. Though I will be enjoying the Endgame pack when it comes out!
