2003 ford focus tdci 1.8 starting issue.

Have a 1.8 review Ford focus estate. When I start it, it takes a few seconds to turn over. Bit lumpy and a bit smokey, light grey that is. It will tick over and stall. Restart it and same happens, when I give it a few recap it fluckates and dies. It will hiccup now and again. But when it reaches running temperature it drives as new. It has new feul filter. Glow plugs are good. Help

Could be the engine coolant temprature sensor but thats a guess, is the engine light on??? if it is then get the codes read. If not find someone who is good with diagnostics to scan the live data but expect to lose the car for a day or two as finding cold start issues can be a pita having to keep allowing the car to get cold again

Hi, thank you for your reply. No lights on at all. Just the starting problem. Goes into Bennett's in Watford tomorrow.
