The Ferrari 250 gte

I recently spotted what must be one of the prettiest ferrari's of all time, the 250 gte. I know it cannot compete with the SWB, GTO etc, but in terms of understated class and style it looks simply gorgeous. Does anyone have experience of these cars? Are there many in the uk? What would you expect to pay for a pristine example?

I think they've breached the 100k barrier now. Many were cannibalised in the 1980s to make replicas of more exotic models. I think the similar looking 330 GT 2+2 is a little cheaper. Of course if it's a scruffy barn find it will be worth more ;-)

The hunting to extinction of the GTE is one of the great disgraces of the classic car world. There aren't that many left now simply because so many have been chopped up. It started because they were the cheapest 250, now their price has escalated because it is still worth buying one for £100k, turning it into a SWB or GTO and making a fat profit.
They really need some kind of protection order on them now before they are all gone.

Couldn't agree more, it's a travesty that such an important part of ferrari's history has been used in such a way. I've looked high and low for one in the classifieds, no joy. Anyone know of any for sale?

Just took a look, only one for sale, 250,000 pounds! Are they really that expensive? I think I may have missed the boat!!

There's another in Italy at under half the price. I'd look at Europe.

The 330's are more reasonable.

You're not spending £250k on one unless you have rocks in your head.

They're $150k here, maybe 100-125k in the UK? Lovely cars but they're still 4 sweaters so maybe not the greatest investment ever, but as prices of the Lussos and SWBs go through the roof these are getting dragged right up.

Thanks for your replies, some interesting websites there. But the search goes on... Mobile.de - nothing, classicdriver - nothing, the dealer that was mentioned had one but sold some time ago! They really are proving difficult to track down. Any more ideas?

I love these, although only from the viewpoint of an enthusiast. Funny thing is, I'm not sure I've ever seen one in the metal. But it does remind me of the time I saw a 250 GT Pininfarina Coupé early one morning driving down Jermyn Street in London. New Ferraris in London don't really warrant a second glance but the crisp lines of the silver coupé just looked incredibly stylish.

isnt the GTE the one with both coil and cart springs at the rear? I seem to remember looking at one a while back whose owner I knew?

I know some Ferraris used that arrangement, digging deep into my memory I think the FIAT 1400/1900 was the same and Ferrari may simply have bought its axles from FIAT.

There was a body for sale sans everything else not long ago for 10kAUD. Almost traded the mustang for it. I found some chassis plans and was going to look at custom building suspension from a Jag and a 350 chev engine with triple carbs and a similar looking airfilter with no badges. I only slighlt regret not getting it.

A chap i know asked if i knew the whereabouts of any 250GTEs in any state of disrepair as someone he knows is rounding up a dozen for GTO bases, the butchering trade is still very much alive, We had a bare tub with no identity which was no use for their purpose
