Peugeot 504 - Built For Africa - Tough As Old Boots

A friend sent me a photo ( I Cant seem to upload it ) of a white 504 Estate that they photoghraphed in Egypt. It had done an incredible 369,000 kms and was still going strong !! ( not sure if if was petrol or diesel ) Both headlamps were smashed, but hey, who needs lights in Africa !
Built to with stand the worst that an African road could throw at it, ( Long travel suspension ) the 504 used to be such a common sight and in the mid 80s a great guy i worked for in Shoreditch ( Mr.Ryder ) had a saloon, he loved the thing, but i just cant remember the last time i saw one here.
I remember seeing several in France a few years back.
Anyone have or know of one ? Particularly an estate.

haven't seen one for years, but I have fond memories of a taxi I took in Hurghada, Egypt in the early 90's - a white 504 that looked like it had done a million! Steering wheel was held on by a set of mole grips, which the driver took off to wind down the window, while he was driving along!
The headlights were obviously too precious to use full time as the driver, in the pitch black, had his nose pressed up against the windscreen, looking for other cars, and when he saw one, he'd flash the lights and then carry on spotting any others, who were all doing the same thing too!

Weirdly enough, I have a brand new front wing for one of them sitting in my shed.Wonderful car, the V6 model. But, as the exterior panels were manufactured in the same factory as Lancia panels, they suffered from shocking corrosion issues.
I know of quite a few people who own 504's, but not the coupe variant.
THe decline of Peugeot deserves a thesis; 404 and 504 classy ,tough and great styling but current cars forgettable Euroboxes. A friend had a 604 which was one of the most soothing cars I have ever driven. We owned a scuccession of 205s and 306s-wonderful to drive and sublime handling- lift off oversteer on demand. The last Pug we owned was a 206 in fairly high spec- it was appalling in every respect. And yes- 504 Coupe was utterly sublime
I think the 504 pickup was sold in the UK in small numbers, long after other varients had been discontinued. My Dad's employer had one in the mid 90s which he drove me around in a few times. All the ones I can recall seeing were orange.

I live in deepest France and the 504 saloon or estate is a motor you very, very rarely see. I think I've spotted one in use in the past two or three years.
My pal up the road, however, has a lovely 504 V6 cabriolet in regular summer use. Here it is.
In Portugal there are still loads of 504 pick-ups all over the place, all with curious wooden-sided bodies I've never seen anywhere else.
Wasn't it Clarkson who said a 504 would still start first turn after a direct hit from a tactical nuclear warhead?

Sure I read somewhere that Peugeot were so impressed with the design and rugedness of the Austin Cambridge / Oxford series, that they used it to develop the 404 range ?

They were lovely cars! My dad had a white 504 GL with red interior from 1972-1976 and a metallic blue 504 TI with beige interior from 1976-1979. The Ti was regarded as quite sporting at the time - like a kind of French BMW.
I was too young to remember the white GL, but remember the TI well. It had electric windows and a sunroof, which I was impressed with at six.

The 504 Pickup was also homologated into Group B for rallying. From memoery it was a class winner on the Ivory Coast Rallye in the late 70's early 80'sEdited by gshughes on Wednesday 13th February 10:04

According to What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallet, the firm suffers from combination of problems.
"Peugeot Citroen is losing out in several ways. For a start, its models mainly compete with each other, which makes little sense," Mr Hallet told Sky News.
"It is being undercut on price and quality by rivals, including the incredibly strong Korean makers. And unlike many of its rivals it does not sell cars globally and so take advantage of the scale that provides.
"Furthermore, it can't really compete with the might of the VW group, in Europe or anywhere else."
