So, In August I managed to smash the top third of my left femur into a kabillion bits and had it all bolted back together with a rod and some bolts.
Over Christmas I was allowed to go full weight bearing on it and have been doing physio and hydro since then. However, I still feel a fair distance away from walking without crutches.

So, question is, for those with some sort of knowledge - what sort of timescales can I be looking at before getting anywhere near back to normal (i.e no crutches)?

Can you give us a bit more info - i.e. a proximal femur trauma may involve the hip joint as well - was it just the long bone itself or did you have any damage near / to the hip joint itself? And how old are you, and what kind of health were / are you in before the trauma?

I would expect (and I'm just a student Paramedic and not a Doctor! smile ) that a straightforward femur fracture would be fully load bearing after six to twelve weeks, depending upon the health and age of the patient, and the surgery given to repair (if at all). For instance, a friend of mine had a clean femoral fracture, repaired with a titanium rod - and he was back to pretty much normal within about 6 weeks. He later had the rod removed and all is now well after some basic physio.

If the trauma is more complicated, i.e. as you say 'smashed to bits' then the rehabilitation period goes intrinsically upwards obviously - and as I say, if it compromised the hip joint at all as well, then I would expect the recovery time to be much more.

Let me know some more info!
