Hi
I'm doing the first long roadtrip in my Caterham from Woking where my parents are to my girlfriend's in Tamworth then onto Brecon in Wales for a short holiday. Motorways are always a bit of a nightmare in the Caterham so does anyone have any good route ideas along the way involving good roads?

I'll leave someone with knowledge re England to sort that side of the border

Cross in to Wales via the (original) Severn Bridge
Follow up the Wye Valley to Monmouth A466 - can use Tintern Abbey as a good backdrop for a photo opportunity
Some will say take the Usk road but, to me, it's not as beautiul a route (though the roads are nice - i prefer the Trellech/Treleck road than the southern one if i had to decide between them)
At Monmouth:
Rockfield Road (home of Rockfield Studios) B4233 >> Abergavenny

Abergavenny >> Crickhowell along A40 (nothing exciting)
or
Aber >> Gilwern (A465 Heads of the Valleys road)
Gilwern >> Crick. A4077

Turn for Llangattock - in Llangattock turn on to unnumbered road to join the B4560
Reach the B4560 and do it a couple of times - according to desire.

Finished? >> Llangynidr B5488 >> Talybont (on Usk)
Left for the reservoir and up via the Mountain Railway
>> Merthyr >> A465 >> Hirwaun
Left on to A4061 to Rhigos viewpoint - grab an ice cream and hope it's not raining

Return to HoV road but over roundabout on to A4059 via penderyn (passing Wysgi distillery) >> A470 and left for Brecon over the Storey Arms

[enjoy the area - others more au fait with the roads there can help for the time you're visiting]

to Tamworth:
exit Brecon passing cathedral on B4520 >> Lower then Upper Chapel
Left on to B4519 across Epynt ranges >> Garth
Left >> Beulah on A483
Right on to B4358 >> Newbridge on Wye
Right 300 m then left on to, still, B4358 >> A4081 >> Llandrindod Wells
A483 >> Crossgates .. right A44 >> Penybont
A488 north to Shrewsbury
Fun road all the way
[good lunch to be had at The Horse & Jockey Knighton if the timing works out that way]

If Shrewsbury's too far north then turn RIGHT Knighton area and head for Mortimer's Cross (whether via Knighton or Presteigne)
>> Lucton B4362 >> Orleton (B4361) >> Woofferton B4362
Cross A49 >> Tenbury Wells A456 >> MIDLANDS [hopefully someone else can point out a few roads from that area >> Tamworth]

anyway, just some ideas smile

Wow thanks for that. Looks like I'll have to get the Mrs some Map reading lessons!

When I go form Kidderminster to Tenby I go out through Bewdley. Tenbury Wells, Leominster its a brilliant drive especially if the roads are clear I did Kiddemrinster to Tenby in a little over 3 hours on boxing day morning. I would probalblyuse the motorway to get form Tamworth to get down to Oldbury Junction 2 on the M5 down through Hagley to Kidderminster.
