E90 M3 convertible, or B3 Alpina against 997 cab C4S

Hi,
I have changed cars too many times of late.
I went from a Porsche 996 to a Jag XKR to a Caterham to a Lotus Exige. Wife does not want to drive Exige at all but loved the 996 and XKR. So she says get a 997. But wait a minute an M3 convertible is that little bit more practical for a bit of GT Touring, the hard top is a great idea.
So for one or two holidays a year to the continent and some fun weekends how is the M3 convertible to live with?
I see one or two B3 Alpina convertibles also which are that little bit rarer and maybe a bit softer sprung and economical.
The other big difference is that an M3 2008/9 is about ten grand less than a 2007 997.
I would welcome some thoughts and advice.
