What to do......
Discussion
background first of all: I've been in business mobile account management and sales now for nearly 3 years, been consistently one of the best account managers in the team and i am the one most of the team will turn to for info/help when needed.
currently my figures are down on what they should be and this has been monitored by HR, now i accept they are low but 90% ytd with 5 months left of the year for me to claw it back.
I currently face having to rake in over 150% of this months target or losing my job with a new baby and new house to pay.
I enjoy my job, the people i work with and customer i have to deal with but due to accounts i spent 24 months nursing through all the s
t that comes with having business mobiles and the team expanding just as my customers all came round to the point of upgrade they took around 1000+ accounts away from me, thus leaving me with pure b
ks to deal with and my figures dropping as a result while i watch all my former customers be sold to by colleagues just in the door.
this is the most down I have ever been about a job and now i face having to start again with no real qualifications etc to fall back on.
what do i do? 1) take the sacking and fight it later 2) apply for position within another role in business 3) walk away head held high and start again?
and if any of you powerfully built company directors fancy renewing your mobiles and landlines for the business let me know! it would help!
I jest of course!

I jest of course! You need to look at your contract of employment which will say one of two things:
1) Your sales targets are based on new business wins and not the rolling renewals / upgrades those new customers you've won take out downstream
or
2) Your sales targets are based simply on money banked.
If 2 and they sack you, you will have grounds to take them to task on the basis that they actively and deliberately prevented you benefiting from the business you had won.
If 1, then you need to reassess your ability to hit targets and if you don't feel you can, then look to bail soon as.
Good luck.

This doesn't help to change the mindset of your employer but 1 month to commence and complete a sales target capability/disciplinary procedure will not go down well at the Tribunal. I once performance managed a sales person out with the reviews at 2 week intervals but you still have to step through the correct procedural steps. Even at 2 weeks it is 2 months to complete the process. We were vindicated at Tribunal but we were nervous about how much we had compressed the process. Have you had any formal warnings?

There's a subtle but important difference between "Business development account manager" and "Account Manager" and the lines between both is all too often blurred.
Business development is as it says on the tin, all about winning new business. Account management is about managing that business that is won and the performance indicators will thus be different depending on what you are employed to do.
As I say, this is an often blurred line and is quite likely that your contract is not quite as specific as it should be - which could work in your favour as well.
