Trade Car Problems
Discussion
Hi Guys, I normally float around the forums and have joined up as I have a question I'm sure someone can help me with.
Been having a bit i a time recently and forved to sell my car, downsize house etc. Picked up a cheap run around today, needed something with goods MPG for everyday use as money is tight. Anyways so bought a 60k, 02 plate Punto from a dealer for £995. Road tested fine, could see no immediate problems.
Literally whithin a few hours if driving it there is a oil smell coming through the vents (likely valve cover gasket), suspension had started creaking (not present in road test), some slight brake squeal (not present/noticed in road test) and a strange judder, similar to being in the wrong gear, when slowing down in 2nd.
I signed the invoice 'sold as seen, no gurantee given or implied' which I I am fairly certain, means nothing as I can not forfeit my statutory rights. So, on the basis of some seemingly bad problems after a few hours use, is there anything I can do? I have to have my 19month old boy in the car, so I won't drive it if it does turn out dangerous, but my cash sources are at the moment, now cleaned out. I no I am dumb buying a used car, but needs must right now. Was just kinda hoping the man upstairs would see me right!
Anybody help?

Sorry, didnt read title properly when I asked whether private or trade sale. I'm guessing trade from invoice and title.
I think you can go back to the dealer and ask them about it. They'll probably tell you that you had time to test the car was to your liking and that it'd not be unreasonable for a sub grand car to have some faults. Ideally need them listing out - can you pay for an inspection from AA or similar? I think if you're open with the garage that you've found some problems you werent aware of, you'd like to get them investigated and come back to them, you'll be in a better position to know where to go next.

Yes, ask the garage be open with them and tell them what is wrong.
If they are a decent bunch they may offer to help as its their reputation, if they are not then i would find a good garage to take a look at it and offer their opinion. The second option won't give you grounds to go back to the ones who sold you it but will at least help build a picture of what needs doing immediately.
I know how you feel but would you sell it on knowing its broke, dangerous? So in reality you can only do the above or scrap it, if it turns out to be a liability

Unfortunately for the dealer not so in this case, if you want to sell parts then that's fine, working cars is another matter and on the way home from purchasing the dealer has no chance.Broken electric wing mirror on the passenger side, maybe, car dropping it's lunch not so much.Hence why you can get some very good bargains being sold as parts only, sometimes you don't even need to tax or MOT it.

It could be just a breather. Valve Cover Gasket seems a bit specific , unless it's been diagnosed - I read the OP in the faith that he might not know what was wrong. If it is a gasket, it's not a hard job to replace - I'd not be thinking it's dropped it's lunch. Suspension, similar, new shocks are £40/pair, and an hour for fitting. Neither are known to be actual problems as it stands though
Super quick replies...thanks guys!!
Have a mechanic friend poking his head under the bonnet tomorrow, and if there is anything real wrong, will get in touch with the dealer. Have been reading up and looks like the suspension and possible rocker gasket should be cheap enough. Fingers crossed the de-acceleration judder is nothing too serious, I did come across one post on the net the mentioned threaded wheel hub, meaning wheel nuts where not fully fastened or another that mentioned possible engine mounts.
I did also just look and found some slight milking on the oil cap, I know head gasket is a common one on this car so will check that out too. (P.s, If your wondering why I didn't check this at the dealer, I couldn't find it, the shame!!. I was already confused by the engine set up and didn't realize the rubber bung was the cap! Doh. Its why I don't fix my own car, ha)

Is it a 1.2 8v? Notorious for gasket problems as well as lots of other things. The judder could be a spark plug covered in oil. The oil seeps from the oil cover area and down into spark plug 1 if any is spilled while filling. A simple spark plug change (just the one nearest the oil cap) might solve that issue.
