2009 Kona Stinky Deluxe DH/Freeride
Hi all,
Not posted in here before, but kind of need to let off some steam with fellow pedal'ers!
I'm having a mid-thirties crisis and all of a sudden I want to revisit my youth of trying to kill myself on a downhill bike!!!
The technology has moved on a lot in the ten years or so! I'm not ready to blow £2000 just yet on my itch, but have been seriously looking at used examples in particular the 2009 Kona Stinky Deluxe original RRP £2935.
There are few about for sale with varying prices and I'm just wondering what kind of money is about right. I'm after a nice used but not abused example...
If anybody has any experience of the Stinky range it would be great to hear your opinions on them.

I was in a similar position a few months back and ended up with a Kona but a 08 model. I paid £400 for it via PinkBike.
I've since spent £100 on replacing bearings, brake pads, cables, grips and a few other bits but still cracking value for a 4 year old £2k bike

I think everybody goes through a 'stinky phase' when they fancy trying some gravity riding. There's always piles of them for sale so they're good value.
Not bad bikes at all, as someone said they're not Downhill bikes, but that's not such a bad thing, current crop of DH specific bikes is insanely expensive and as they've got slacker and lighter they're much harder to ride unless you're totally flat out.
You'll need an uplift, skilift or you'll be doing a lot of pushing to use it, which is way so many people buy a big bike only to find they're only getting to ride it a couple of times a year and get rid, if you plan to earn your descents by pedalling to the top you're much better off with a 6" Enduro type bike, they're more than capable of handling everything from a ride to work to a black run in Whistler they're probably actually better on a DH track that a proper DH of a decade ago.
Owning a big bike can be like owning an elefant IMHO it's cool, but can be a bit frustrating when you discover how much you actualy use it and the limited places you can ride it properly.

Haha brilliant. You are right though, for ages now I managed various DH tracks eg those at FOD on a hardtail with 4inch front travel.
I tried a Trek Remedy for a while and found that as you describe it could go up hills surprisingly well, it could cope with downhills quite well but the geometry and frame size wasn't for me. A Stinky replaced that but as you say was too much bike, too heavy and ultimately less chuckable.
My current choice of FS is a Kona Howler - 4inch travel at the rear, 5 inch at the front and weighs barely half a kilo more than my hardtail. With a 36T chain ring and 9 at the back it with a long seat post it is do it all.
That said the Specialized Pitch or Stumpjumper will be a nice upgrade as these are lighter an just as capable.
Yeah, I know Stinky's are quite 'chunky'.
I really like the look of them, but I want one that gives me the extra gears to at least make it possible to go up some small hills (but mostly down).
I'm winning on eBay at the moment with the above bike. I'm sure if I get it, it will put a smile on my face for the summer and then I can get a sensible bike!? Haha

Personally I always thought Kona full suss bikes were just over complicated heavy versions of single pivot designs.
If you look at where the pivots are I cant see how it will work much better than a swing arm single pivot type set up. Nothing against Kona's (I own one) but it could be part of the reason they are cheap to buy used.

Not down on Stinky bikes at all, it's just a bit focused, especially for an 'only bike' they can climb - I actually took one for a loop of 'The Wall' at Afan years back, had a great laugh, but killed me on the way up!
If I was in the market for a tough 7 inch bike I'd probably be looking at an SX Trial, but they demand quite a premium even for the older ones, we've got a bike park opening 40 mind from me at Gethin in a couple of months, if its what its meant to be I'll be after an SX or Stinky for a 'cheap' thrasher!
