Looking for an average motorway run and around town. Is 30+ mpg optimistic around town?

No, not likely. I had a 1.6 Zetec petrol 'Ebony'. It would return less than that round town. I probably averaged something around 30mpg, but I wasn't doing a lot of dual carriageway cruising. It was all suburban stuff and B roads. Still, I thought it was pretty thirsty for it's 99bhp. Lovely car overall though.

Might touch 40 but I wouldn't count on getting that sort of economy over a tank.

You should get over 40 on a run. I got 43 going from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and back when I had mine a few years ago.

I now have a 2.0 Focus and I'm optimistic it will hit 40 on the same run with a bit of skilled driving.

Overall, they're about par for the course for an old 1.6 fuel economy wise

Currently one of the cras I drive.

Good steering and chassis balance, but forget any kind of economy. 30 is very optimistic. Needs block shifting et al to make an improvement.

Are we talking about start/stop traffic here or b-roads or motorway, etc?

You struggle to get 30mpg from a 1.6 focus?

I get around 32mpg from my mK1, 2.0 and that isnt even trying!

I have the 2 litre Mondeo and get 32-34 knocking about and 40 mpg on a good run. I do drive steady though.

Same scenario (and car) with me. The car doesn't even warm all the way when I do my daily drive to the office

I used to get high 20's around town, mid 30's on a run. Highest I ever got was about 42 being very, very steady on long journeys

I got 30ish out of mine

Utterly excellent cars

Fit a decent set of winter tyres and its only ground clearance that will worry you
