The Dave Allan Trophy Race

Hello Everyone.
Many of you will remember the tragic news last year when we lost a valued and popular friend. Dave Allan lost his life in an incident at Millbrook Proving Ground testing road cars for Honda.
Hondas Synchro Motorsport will host a race in his honour at Castle Combe on the weekend of the 15th and 16th June.
THE DAVE ALLAN TROPHY RACE will be 45 Minute, 1 or 2 driver race for Saloons, Sports & GT cars for just £325.00 per car
A unique race for any Saloon, Sports or GT cars in which even the slowest car could be the outright winner based on a time allowance relative to each cars real performance (Handicap).
HONDA of the UK Manufacturing Ltd. are inaugurating this special race in memory of Dave Allan and envisage attracting a rich mix of racing Saloons, Sports or GT cars ( sports racing cars, prototypes & single seaters are ineligible )
RACE: 45 minutes total duration including a mandatory 2 minute pit stop.
Optional 1 or 2 driver race.
Refuelling allowed.
Tyre changing allowed.
Mandatory pit stop after 20 elapsed minutes but prior to 30 minutes elapsed.
QUALIFYING: 20 Minutes, fastest time set irrespective of driver determines starting grid position, both drivers must qualify. The fastest driver must be the race starter.
HANDICAP: Following qualifying the timekeepers who are judges of fact will determine each cars time handicap with the objective for all cars to cross the finishing line simultaneously. The timekeepers decision is final. Any falsifying of Qualifying times will be severely penalised during the race.
The starting grid positions will be declared from qualifying times, disregarding time handicap.
All competitors will be notified of their time handicap as published.
ELIGIBLE CARS: Any Saloon, Sports, or GT cars ( excluding Sports Racing Cars, Prototypes, Single Seaters ).
Engine capacity unlimited.
TYRES: free / optional.
FUEL: Petrol, Diesel, Hy Brid, Electric.
ELIGIBLE COMPETITORS: Those holding a Race National B or higher licence. Club membership is optional.

Just a short update.
All the trophies have arrived.
Trophy for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Trophy for "1st on Track" before the application of the lap penalties.
Trophy for Qualifying P1.
There is then a very large Annual Trophy which is almost 1 metre high. This will be awarded to the 1st place care after the lap penalties. This will be bought back every year.

Despite the weather it was a great race day on Sunday at Castle Combe for the Dave Allan Trophy race. The unique handicap system, administered by the MSA, kept us waiting for 20 minutes after the race to declare the handicap results but the on track winner and the handicap winner was Tim Woodman in a Honda powered Caterham 7, second went to Kelly and Dan Williams in a Fiesta ST and third to Lewis Penney in a Citreon C2 VTS. Trophy for fastest qualifier went to Perry Waddams in his TVR Tuscan Challenge Chevrolet LS3. The new Synchro Civic didn't make the grid in the end, due to an electrical issue but Alyn James and Peter Venn came home 4th in the Honda Jazz. Hundreds of Honda employess came to support Synchro at what is their local race circuit, only 30 minutes drive from the Swindon factory.
Big thumbs up to Britcar, for providing their truck and awning and carrying out all the admin for the race, also to Castle Combe circuit for all their help and support in arranging and making the race happen.
This will be an annual race which will be back bigger and better next year hopefully with some more Britcar competitors entering.

Well I can agree with some of that but not all!
Full thumbs up to Britcar admin for coming to support with full truck and awning-that was good to see- but where were the Britcar teams? It would have been good to see a turn out in support?
And the race format? I'm sorry but that didn't do it for me- faster drivers go first so after half way we watch the slower ones and first past the flag means nothing-well it might but we don't know.. I was watching from Quarry and after 20 minutes people were leaving- could I just suggest that if this is to be an annual event that you do the handicapping at the start and, like hot rods, have the fastest drivers start at the back so we get a thrilling chase through the pack kind of race rather than a confusion. We left early....but get it right and I'd love to join in next year.

Thanks for the feedback. It is good to get the viewpoint of someone who was watching the race. I think one of the main factors was the weather, a lot of people had been stood out in the rain for most of the day. I'm sure with a fine sunny day the whole atmosphere would have been different and people would have been more inclined to stay to the end.
It's part of the Honda DNA to reflect on what we have done and then take actions to improve. We are already discussing what went well and what didn't go so well. As stated in the original post, we aim to come back bigger and better next year, which means we will make changes to make the race more attractive to both competitors and spectators, including reviewing the race format and handicap system. Regarding Britcar entries, we had some good responses early on but as always in motorsport, circumstances change and things happen which are out of the control of those concerned. I share your disappointment but I am optimistic we will get a bumper entry from Britcar competitors next year in addition to this years competitors returning.
