I would think that any reference books on the subject would be in Italian text, and difficult to obtain in the UK.

No connection as far as I know. That Pathe film didn't show the half of it - try to watch a film called "The Killer Years" and you'll see the aftermath of the crash in all its detail. Truly shocking.
