I can't help watching this clip wondering how one would be as a fun road car and the costs forgetting the snow tyres of course. Stripped out with nothing more than buckets . Perfect

Financially you mean?????

I'm wondering if they retire them from ice rallying but keep them in good fettle then sell them off. Just a thought of course

And I'm talking about having one with a 3.2 engine but low geared for lots of grunt but only good for circa 120mph tops .
Anyone done anything similar?

Give Francis Tuthill a call. He has a couple of cars for sale but no prices shown. Be prepared for a shock. The 911's that CH were driving looked like 3.0 litre SC motors to me apart from the 2.2.
You might be a bit suprised as to what it costs to build a good strong rally or race going 911.

sure will do tks. how much fun they look though
i know that the CH kermit was circa 100k but when YOU have a car built you pay for all the labour etc. IM thinking more of a car thats been around a few years and already done but may be surplus to requirements for a business. Have a feeling i may be suprised though as you say. Ill let you know how i get on tks

My thoughts are unless you get lucky. Invariably you end up buying someone else's problems. A shell that is bent, badly rotten or just plain old tired. An engine or gearbox that is worn out. Suspension that is way past its sell by date. Remember that even the youngest 3.2 is 24 years old and race or rally cars that have been around a while are getting on a bit.
I guess GT Two is like minded like many on here. I like to start with a blank sheet of paper and build my own masterpiece. Just be mindfull that it is a very expensive process.

I've driven that blue car!! Almost exactly two years ago, when it was freshly built and they were operating in Norway. It was near the end of the season and it was due a thorough overhaul before competing in an international rally a few weeks later. It really was beautifully built and did have lower gearing. I can only echo everything CH said in the video about the experience really.

At the time they were still buying cars from the USA to build as they needed more cars, not in big numbers but I doubt they'd have any reason to sell any off, better to call them and ask though. If you had them build one for you I'm sure you easily be at £50k plus, possibly a lot more. I would think if you could get a used one for £30k it would be a steal.

It'd need quite a few changes for road or track use though - suspension and gear ratios for a start.

If anyone sees the video and even vaguely thinks about going to drive one then DO IT - I can't recommend it enough, an awesome experience. drivingbiggrin

There's a Tuthill car for auction soon, estimate is half the price of the build cost:

i've driven that blue car too! it was about 8 yrs ago and i stupidly didnt buy it for 10 grand. the engine had not long been rebuilt by bob watson and the car had been owned originally by the pink floyd manager Steve o'rourke, supposedly gilmour had done his ards in it or something too. was a bit scruffy but very sound and had ridiculous low miles on it. would have been great fun for teh money. hey ho.

going ice driving first weekend in march...will report back

these are just std Tuthill rally cars though, as I understand it, just the tyres are different. (richards 2.2 powered 912 is obv a different cup of tea)

their preferred engine build is a 3 litre twinplug on carbs.

for any ground up car you can pencil in:

10-20k strip down, blast and bare metal repairs
8k panel work, gaps, paint
10-15k engine rebuild
10-15k put it all back together
10k parts (LSD, seats, brakes, trim etc)

plus the base car. in reality its close to £100k whatever your desired spec

It might be different then - we were told "ours" had just been built from a California import and it did look completely new. I just checked my photos and it didn't have a ducktail back then either. More likely that they're using a 2011 car for CH's promo though.

I also remember being told it was a 3 litre (not a 3.2 as CH says in the film) but can't remember whether carbs or injection. It certainly went well. biggrin The only time we wore seatbelts or helmets all day was for the rally stage hot ride, which was rather impressive - 5th gear sideways on a very narrow track with trees everywhere driving

Tuthill's used to run as www.norwayicedriving.com (we went to Geilo in Norway) but it looks like they just had to change their name when re-locating to Sweden.

I did consider another company at the time, who operated in Sweden and did use an impact bumper car as well as an M3-engined BMW Compact and possibly a Subaru or Evo - they may be who you mean.
