Is he running standard power? If not get better rods. Those obviously not strong enough at that point in the rod. Detonation may have caused it but that is unlikely to break the rod at that particular point. IMO.

^ Those are the caps. I'd be interested to see what the shells are like and if they've been fretting. Also, I'd check the crank for straightness and correct balance.

How long has the engine been together ?

Could be something out of balance, clutch, flywheel etc etc
