Folks - i am looking at a car for the wife and did a HPI type check.

Car was first registered 1 March 2009, shows a keeper change at 24 Jan 2010. The report however says 1 previous keeper.

i would have thought there has to be one keeper when first registered and then change in 2010 would have been second keeper? or would first keeper not show up if it was a pre-registered dealer?

thanks

Is the keeper till 2010 not the one previous keeper, and the keeper from then till now is the current keeper?

Exactly this, the description is "Previous keepers". The current keeper is obviously not a previous keeper, so the value of one is correct. If the OP buys the car, he becomes the keeper and the car will then have had 2 previous keepers.

If it's for sale at at a garage, they don't count as a keeper. If you sell to the trade, then you fill in a different bit of the form and it's kind of in limbo in between keepers, so it'll still say 1 previous on the document (1st keeper) the "current" keeper will be the 2nd owner who has just sold it to the garage, and if you buy it you'll become the 3rd keeper (so 2 previous keepers) and the garage who sold it to you won't feature anywhere.

"1 previous" = 2 total.

yeah, i think its exactly this. buying from a main dealer. last keeper change was in 2010, hpi doesn't show person who sold it to the dealer last month. i would have thought that when you sell to dealer and you notify DVLA, that this would have updated HPI too...i guess it takes time.

Because it went to a tradesman, there will have been no change in PREVIOUS owners as when purchased by a trading company they do not have to be recorded as an owner. This means the second owner who sold it to the garage can't be a previous owner yet as there is no current owner to replace him. This gives it only one previous owner.

Or something to that effect...
